I think it would be cool to build a 30/31 A coupe for the flats race it on Sundays swap the rear gear set and drive it to work Mondays?
How much did you take out of the top?...looks good One of those Studebakers is on my list for a project..... Skot
This my buddy's 34. He has a Ray Barton 572ci hemi that dynoed 850hp. He drives from MN, switches the wheels/tires, puts in a lexan windshield, and goes racing. Last time he did 189mph before the radiator supports collapsed and pushed the radiator into the fan. I believe he's driven it out there 5 times now. He'll drive all over town too. I love this car.... slim
Frank Currie has a roadster that went over two bills. Big Ford motor. The SoCal boys have a roadster that is known to be driven on the streets, as well. Of course, the Chisenhall Stude is legendary....
He also takes the head light off and switches the gears around in the quick change. This car is waaaaay cool!
Check out www.hopupmag.com, last month and you'll see both the high and low speed division Rolling Bones cars driven on the street. Two hot rods broken beyond road repair and the only way to get them home, was to drive the race cars.
I help out some with Gary Hart's 787 Studebaker from Springfield MO. He makes the local cruise night on occasion. He drove it more on the street when it had a blower but was only running in the 220s. The turbo set up put the car into the 240s and climbing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cW1qOCdzr58
We tend to "road harden" our blue suede Stude on rural roads in Mn, though the local constabulary might object if they were aware......
My project ,P38 tank will have a Montana plate , I will drive it on the street. the registration will be for a 1943 Lockheed? won't that blow a mind or two.
Didn't Banks drive there diesel dodge dakota pulling a trailer to the flats set the record and drive it home? with different gears and tires
In 1977 I set the initial V/4 street roadster record in my 1926 Ford Roadster at 87.92 mph average. To my knowledge that was the last record set by a real street car. It has full real street equipement, I. E. real headlights with high/low beam, operating horn, wiper, brake lights, full interior, current safty inspection, fully insured. I drove the car to the track, put in the 3 point roll bar, opened the straight pipe, made a qualifing run 0f 91 and change, made a down run of 94 and change and made a return run of 85 mph. Nowdays you only need to go one way for the record. I still have the car, and it's still bitchen.
I dig this thread.....I'm building my 46 for coupe as a dual purpose salt/Maxton driver. I'm in the process now of a complete suspension upgrade - Fab9/4 link/coil over rear & a tube A-arm/R & P steering. Drive train is TURBO/Intercooled, TrickFlo headed SBC with 4 spd. trans. Interior is Bomber themed all aluminum & rivits dash, front & rear seats & trunk area. American Racing Salt Flat wheels & decent sized hoops in & up in the wheel house. I'm actually trying to finish it for BilletProof FLA. We shall see how that goes. I've not posted pix here on the HAMB as although the exterior is "traditional" the underpinnings are not. I've got it on another site. Paco
Before it was the Thacker and Shine P.R. Special, Kiwi Steve built and drove that Roadster everywhere. For a while it was his only running and driving car. Eleven of us drove it on license passes at the 2000 Speed week....
Anymore the rule changes over the years have made it nearly impossible to run a street car on the salt or El Mirage. The last street driven car to qin the no.1 plate at El Mirage was around 1963. To make a street car race legal and a possible record setter could be done but by the time you will have finished it will be more of a race car than a street car. Its nothing more than a sign of the times. Cars get faster, safety rule get tighter.
Very nice catch indeed! I always thought Jack Chisenhall's(sp?) Stude was cool. Drove to the flats then went 200+ with the a/c on.
Thats what I was thinking. Are any of there rules posted online? Or would I have to order a rule book?
Thanks. He's just getting back from another run this year. He's trying to go 200mph with it. He had a 528ci KB in it but it'd only do about 173. This guy's the reason I'm into hot rods as much as I am.
