I came home to Riverside in 1981. I spent my youth at Fontana, the Beach, and Pomona. I was out that direction with my wife, who was not from this area, so I went over to the strip. It was much like the photos you posted. I told her about the four jets and other things and we drove down the strip. If you pass by there now you'll still see the eucalyptus trees but its now all houses. Its all so sad. Every day I thank the Lord for putting me on the earth when he did.

This is the very car used in the infamous 1971 Indy burn down when Carbone wouldnt succomb to Garlits ploy of him being the last to stage. Buster Couch was screaming for one or the other to make a move. Garlits finally relented, Carbone followed suit and then beat Big Daddy

The other half of the story is that Garlits had warmed up prior to going to the start line where as Carbone came to the line with his engine stone cold. Therefore Garlits engine temperature was going off the dial while Carbone's was just getting to the ready to race mark.

Carbone was also paying Garlits back as he had been beaten by Garlit's in the previous final round match up they had raced when Garlits did the same thing to him. Well that's the story that was told to me anyway.

Garlits fell twice, well once if you count the other red lighting, to a FED that year at two major events. At 71 Smokers meet, Rick Ramsey drove the Keeling and Clayton fueler to a quicker time, but red lit in the final. Then at World Finals held at Amarillo, Schultz and Glenn put it to Big Daddy with their FED. These served as but two of three examples where a FED earned a big title. The third being the late Van Iderstine top fueler, formerly the Hot Wheels dragster of Tom McKwen at 72 Grand Nationals at Moulson.

Here is Ross and my Nova at Sanair in the late 90's. We swapped out the 513's for 373's, put in a 182 manual glide with a 4000 stall convertor in place of the 208 but kept the 355 stock eliminator motor. We now drive the car on the street, even to the Syracuse Nationals. Henry.

Here's one that never hit the track, at least while the Wheatley's owned it. They bought the car new at the dealership where I worked. It was a 307 3spd car that they drove 15 miles home and disassembled.

It had an aluminum head Jenkins engine, DANA 60 rear and Chrysler super stock springs. It was supposed to run Pro Stock and A/MP. I can't remember why they sold it, but I took the photos for the sale ads. That is the original sticker on the window, $3.700 if I remember correctly.
