    65 f100. 86 5.0 built like a 302. mild cam

Ive been doing some homework here... and it has lead me virtually no where...
I have a neighbor who has a 302 in his mustang.. he put an X pipe and flow masters on it... run out the back with some chrome round tips... sounds killer... but is it a 60s sound? probably not.

Guy at the muffler shop says he doesnt really think that an X pipe or really even an H pipe will help out a basically stock motor. and it would cost more to do... now.. that said.. love to hear your opinions... I did see that summit sells an X pipe with cut outs for ok price...

Now I run flows dumped on my 01 supercrew... and love the throaty sound it makes... but Ive read that alot of guys are liking the new cherry bomb mufflers. as well as a like muffler from thrush.

I know some guys love gl*** packs but I never really acquired the liking to that sound...

So what do you think Straight pipes to the muffler and dumped.. or out the back ...
    or
    X piped or H piped.

And what do you recommend for a kickin But sounding muffler.

Just my opinon, but I like them straight back to the muffler and dumped out the back or in front of the rear tire. I'm born and raised on Ford's and I've always liked the tone of a smallblock.

**** Flowmasters! Unless you want it to sound like a Mustang! If you want it to sound like an olddies car,run Smittys(or is it Smithys?),or you can do like most and just run straight pipes.
Ever see a *****in Hotrod and it sounds like a Chevell! Don't do that!

Here's my son's Shoebox with straight pipes and a 302! click the pic...

Sweet ride.... thats pretty much what the truck sounds like now... Ive got some flex exhaust pipe on it.. going into 2 3 foot sections of pipe with turn downs. I will have to look into the smitty smithies. or whatever they are.

keep the ideas rollin.. Thanks fellas.

It is SMITHY'S. You can get them from Summit and they are now made in 2", 2 1/4", and 2 1/2". Irun the 2 1/2" with an H Pipe on my 302 in my 32.
Badbob, you've heard it, sounds bad*** no?

Ditto what Bob said! F Flowmasters! Go GL***, period. I've got a Dynamax 2 in/1 out. Not duals, but sounds frigg'n sweet. Also kinda acts as a x-over, but I'm sure it's benefits are not very measurable. Go Gl***!!!

    Can I get an amen?
    Screw flowmasters!
I just bought some gl*** pack bottle mufflers. I searched for the best price.
I found thrush makes gl*** pack bottles and Summit Racing sells them cheaper than I could find anywhere. I think they were $22.50 each.
There going on my daily driver F1 with a 302.
Bottles will last a hell of a long time. They are a heavy gauge steel not sheetmetal like most mufflers.

HA HA! I paid $8 ea for some 12" gl***packs at LongBeach swap a while back! Plan on putting them on my Merc.

Love the sound of your 32,Don! I think 302's have a unique sound.

Regardless of the brand muffler, my 5.0 without a cross over sounds more like two 4 bangers to me at the lower rpms. Up high it is ok. Still, I sure wish I could have found a way to fit an X-pipe in the system before the mufflers. I've even considered a loop of pipe around the lower front of the motor connecting the header collectors but that seemed too drastic. Gary

I guess I should clarify... I never really heard a vehicle I liked with them. The thing that mainly turns me off of them is the pops.. in my last daily driver .. chevy z71 (which was stolen) had gl***packs on it when bought... it was all pop no depth of tone... I felt like billy bob redneck.. didnt help it was hunter green... pulled them off an put magnaflow with a dump.. and it was all throat and mellow tone.. and not too loud.. the packs were blue... dont know who made them... had to of been 14 inches long or so.

I can agree with you guys about the flowmaster... its a great sound for a modern car or truck. but I dont think it fits the tone of the 65 . One thing you will learn about me.. is if you can win me over... I usually will carry that on to the next guy by preaching the gosphel of whatever it is.. so lol win me over on the packs .. or smithys .. which by the way. I found only like a hand full of smithys clips to hear what they sound like... the videos were junk. and had a dodge dakota as one... which it sounded like a rednecks truck... there was one flat head ford that sounded pretty good..

    I drive a 63 ford fairlane with a 68 Mustang 302.
It has the stock manifolds , stock exhaust to the back seat, then CHERRY BOMBS and
straight pipes out the back. I can not tell you how many times people tell me how great it sounds. From the front its dead quit. Inside there is no drone and you can here the radio just fine.
Now..... from the back..... MAN ..... does it sound fantastic. Rumble , rumble and no drone. I think because of the firing order of older small block fords and the way cylinder 7 and 8 fire so close together a crossover pipe is a big mistake. You really need for them to fire independently.
Now----stand in back of the car and you can here them firing in stereo. Left rumble -right rumble over and over again The greatest music in the world!!

    I had a 69 Torino 302 midly warmed up.
Dual cherry bombs out the back. It sounded great. This girl I was seeing said man that car is awesome it sounds like a speedboat rumbling to her house.
I wish I shot a video of the car running.
I have the same engine in my F1 truck but now its bored with gt40 heads and a few other goodies.
The open headers sound nice haha IM trying to raise money for exhaust.
All I have is the mufflers right now.

my engine is a 5.0 ho block... mexican? I think.. which ever was thicker... bored 60.. with hyper-eutectic flat top pistons.. heavily modified e6 heads...Eddie intake and carb..a moderate to mild camshaft...flat tappet.. the builder said that particular cam was a favorite for the sound it gives... a replica of some popular ford performance cam.. as is with open headers its loud and lopey makes the whole truck shimy shake...

About that drone thing.. thats something Id like to not have to much of... I am intending on either lizard skinning or sound matting the entire interior... to make it more Wife and family friendly.

the trick with gl***packs is to run the right length. 30" cherry bombs behind a 10.7:1 461 olds didn't pop but it sure rumbled and turned heads. go for like a 24" pack on that 302 and i bet you'd be happy.

The car in Bad Bob's video sounds great, but it don't sound like a stock cam! I have a bone stock 5.0HO in my lincoln with an h pipe and straight pipes back to dumps in front of the axle. Sounds great at WOT, but at low rpm it sounds like ***. With a cam and some timing my car would probably sound great at idle, but stock it sounds like a grocery getter with a hole in the muffler.

I say run what you want, you have to drive it. My self I love the sound of the flowmasters w/x pipe, the more motor you have the better the sound of your ride.

But will your gl***packs set off car alarms when idleing through a parking lot???? Got Flowmasters on my '65 F100 351W and I love the sound, maybe the cam grind and other goodies has something to do with that. Had some Smitties on a 292 y-block and they sounded mellow but good. But they rusted out in a few years. Cherrybombs would probably sound good and last longer too. Might try straight pipes, then you're not out any money if you don't like the sound. Just my 2cents.......
