Seeking some help here, when i got my Olds 394 it was a box of bits as someone had already dismantled it.

I have the following 2 questions

Firstly i have this left over from the short motor build, I'm presuming its maybe the fuel pump pushrod ??? can't see where else it would go ???

Secondly i got a new oil pump a Melling M22F which according to Melling is the correct one for my 394 but its different to the one that came with the engine and don't fit no way as you can see from the pics ???

I'm quite sure that 394 Oldsmobiles don't have a fuel pump pushrod. Also, you must have an early 394; I think that the new oil pump you've got only fits the late ('62-'64) engines, and is the same pump that the next generation of Olds engines used.

I did wonder if there were early and late pumps, Melling don't appear to list the early pump, Don't suppose you could point me in the right direction to get one ???

I don't have the old fuel pump but i would guess it to have the long arm that runs on the concentric on the cam. Still puzzled what it is though ??? I suppose it could be from something entirely different and just found its way into the box of bits before i got them !!!

Terrill Machine in TX sells vintage engine parts for Oldsmobiles. I've dealt with them before; check 'em out.

  7. that spring bolt thing goes on the timing gear that is on the end of the cam, pushes against the timing cover, i have the oldsmobile oil pump part numbers at home, will post later, the pumps interchange with the 455 olds engines too.

yeah i think most stuff for sale groups all the 394s togather.looks like you need a 59-60 pump.the dist. drive is 59-60 only also.other ones are 61-64.if you cant find one anywhere else i belive fusik has them.i think they carry new gears to rebuild the one you have also.good luck

Thanks i just found out its the Cam ****on, i now feel pretty stupid as i considered it to be that months ago but disregarded it as i didn't think the 394 had one 8-(

Thanks for all the help guys, Its very much appreciated, Its not that easy building an old engine in the U.K. so we have to rely on the HAMB guys a lot, You have not let us down yet

another piece that is occasionally forgotten is the oil slinger,
a large thin washer that goes on the end of the crankshaft in front of the timing gear

    also,
in your other thread you have a picture of your motor in mock-up

those heads look to be late 371 heads, '59?

are you sure you have a 394 block, (and oil pump) there?

the first photo looks the the pusher that goes on the timing chain cup behind the water pump (the "cup" over the gear with 3 bolts and ontop of the cam)

I'm glad someone said something. Folks forget there is an early AND a late 371, as well as an early AND a late 394.

    Tony comes through again!

    Steve,
    here's those pictures I mentioned..

on the really grungy motor is the early flat style, as on this '53 303
and on the slightly less grungy motor, a '59 371, is the later stepped style

The oil pumps from '60-back are different from the '61-up oil pumps. The Melling pump is for '61-up. If you need an early pump then you will have to go with a rebuild most likely (although, who knows-- perhaps someone might be offering new ones these days).

The cam ****on and spring go into the nose of the cam. I believe this is for '49-62. I do not recall seeing those in the '63-4 394's that I have torn apart.
