I had a couple ideas in my head. since I don't have an amp in there like django was talking about I was planning on getting an fm modulator like the ones that come with some cd changers. I've seen em on ebay around 20 bucks some even as low as 5. They plug into the antenna port on the radio and have rca audio in. cable from the ipod to that. to connect to the ipod I have 2 ideas. Some of the cigarette lighters have a connection for the line out the goes through the dock connector. Thinking of hooking up to that for the audio out instead of the headphone jack. another option was to install a ipod dock somewhere as they have a line out as well. Never thought about cutting the cigarette adapter off and wiring it in though thats an idea. just make sure the voltage is right. would hate to fry the ipod. oh and desertdoog if the amp has an extra line input you can just hook a cable from the headphone jack to the line input. or just connect it to where the deck ouputs normally connect to the amp, as long as you dont want the deck to be able to use the speakers connected to the amp also.

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to dropping $500-$600 for a stereo either. But the g/f wants music for longer trips. I don't blame her. My buddy had me talked into a $100 cd player with speakers from Walmart, but we couldn't come up with a solution for it to be hiddend and user friendly. So whatever. My car gets accused of being a street rod anyway... [IMG] [IMG]

Man if you cant get an i pod to load either your an idiot or you are linking it to a fucking PC and if you are, throw that fucker away and get a mac.

Steve, before you went and spent some money, the itrip modulators suck dick. especially in an area with a ton of radio stations like So Cal. you can use the reguar modulator that plugs into the anntena port, but there are a few ways to hardwire it into an amp or exsisting system with no problems too and it sounds better. radio shack has a $3.99 cord that plugs right into the RCA outputs

An ipod was one of those things that incubated your soulless double in The Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

I just remembered when I drove my '69 LTD that had no stereo...I had a cassette player (before CDs were mainstream) connected to some small speakers that plugged in using the headphone jack (2.5mm). It wasn't high-tech...but it worked...and was very portable.

I'd think that the same thing can be accomplished with an MP3 player. It may not be fancy but it's tunes.

Let's see if I follow this correctly...

First, you make a completely off topic post. This is OK when (A) it's pertinent or at least entertaining and (B) done in moderation. Your post lacks both.

Second, you slam a product that a HAMBer helped design, only to reveal that the problem was your own ineptitude?!

    What the fuck, man?

actually after about 5 hours of playing with the thing and apple care being closed i was pissed and hated this thing.

and it actually wasnt my fault..they told me the ipod was picky about the drive lettering.what i had to do is change the driver letter and it worked fine.you try to figure that one out on your own

i also wasnt a member back then, how am i supposed to know that anyone worked on it?

I'll be running an ice-link. It'll allow me to use the CD changer controls on my deck to control the iPod.

I really don't think I could live without my IPOD I am truly addicted.
If you already have a FM radio get the ITRIP attachment, with its custom programable stations it works well with places with a lot of stations like SOCAL.
Like Django says I installed a ipod system in my truck. and I couldn't be happier.
At first I was just going to install the stock AMFM stereo back in my truck since my alpine deck got ripped last year, and use the itrip FM modulator for my ipod connection.
But one day while looking in circut city for a boom box that had aux RCA inputs for the ipod (which they don't seem to make anymore) I wandered over to the car stereo dept. they had a 110 watt 2 channel ESA amp on sale for $60.
'DING' light bulb goes of in my head I can use this thing for my ipod in the truck. Since I still had my alpine speakers(they didn't steal those) So I bought this thing and a wiring kit. Spent a afternoon bolting it under my seat and hooking up the new wires. one of the bonus things I got at the 99 cent store was a adjustable mobile phone holder that holds on to the ipod perfectly and sits between the seats right at my right hand so i have all the controls at my finger tips. the great thing about this system is there is nothing to steal unless you want to completely unbolt my seat then unbolt my amp which i think is a lot to do for a 60 dollar amp and if they go to all that trouble it was only 60 bucks.
All I have to say is I have great sound in my truck now. I also have tunes in the shop, home and work with out having to carry a bunch of CD's everywhere or having to change a CD with greasy hands.

mp3 is a sound format that takes an song file and makes it take less space, its almost like vacum packing something
take away uncesserary space and depending on what quaility settings you have it could usually retain almost as good quailty as for instance an cd

an an ipod is like a "sony walkman", a tiny device that runs on batteries and have an harddrive in it to store the mp3s so in the space of an cigarette package you could store from anything to just 1 song to like over 10000 songs

and you could make mp3s out of all your cds or even tapes, a little more work to get mp3s out of tapes though and put em all into the ipod (or any simular device)
(ipod is NOT the only mp3 player on the market)

This is what I had planned for my '53. Keep in mind that it is a 6 volt system. I'm using a voltage booster to provide 12V to a hidden radio (a 64$CDN item), with the iPod connected by a mini-stereo to RCA jacks cord.
A 6 volt behemoth with MP3 capabilities, that's as 'post-Modern' as it gets? [IMG]

Man, how did I skip over this thread?

I thought iPods were sheer frivolity till I won one as a door prize at a graphics seminar. Now I can't live without it. I just have the original 5GB model, but now I am drooling over the ones they just announced last week.

Anyways, I'll add what I have learned about using it in your car:

    iTrip:
works better in some vehicles than others. Mine is excellent in Mrs. Slide's 04 Explorer, but sucks in my 52 and my Grand Am. In the Grand Am, I hafta hold the iPod in a certain position to get a clear signal.

    Hard Connections:
I have a Kenwood CD player in my 52 (I tried to make it inconspicuous by putting it way under the dash, almost against the firewall, but still visible to the driver), and I picked up a connecting cable that plugs into the CD changer port on the back of the stereo, and has a minijack on the other end that plugs into the iPod. Works great!

As for the battery issues, I have never had a problem, but I have noticed that my 2 1/2 year old iPod doesn't last quite as long as it used to. I used to get 9 hours, now it's more like 7. The new ones claim 12.

iPod is brilliant in design and usability, but over priced and I don't like the ACC format that Apple pushes.

I have a 60 gig Nomand Zen that I like a little better than my iPod. It goes for about $300, has twice the HD space, and will play any kind of file I ask it to - mp3 included. I use it in all my cars by way of Aux RCA inputs. Sounds rad.

Ryan the ipod will play any format you want it to as well except for wma and ogg vorbis. Whats wrong with AAC. the end result between AAC(mp4) is a better quality digitally encoded audio file then an mp3.

oh no not wma. what data do you have that shows wma is superior to even mp3? all the stuff I've seen shows a wma compressed audio file to cut out at a lower frequency then either mp3 or aac.
