Thought I'd give this a try. Im looking to swap out the 6 in my 54 Chevy for a V-8, does anyone know if the stock trans will work? thanx
A pick up trans that has the V8 bolt pattern will make it work. You should **** up and do the whole drive train. Better off in the long run. IMHO
Even if it WOULD work, you don't want it. A wheezing 216 was capable of blowing those tiny three-speeds apart...a V8 would just ensure a quicker death! You CAN keep the closed driveline (why???) if that's your wish by using a transmission from a 47-54 (I think...ask Kustom52 to be sure?!) Chevy truck. It bolts to most SBC type bellhousings and accepts the torque tube. But, your best bet is to go with an open drive rear axle (do a search, I won't even repeat 'em all AGAIN!) and an appropriate transmission...TH350 automatic, 'modern' Powerglide, Saginaw 3 or 4 speed, Muncie, Borg Warner, etc.... Luckily, there's a few folks out there who've stuck V8s into those cars before (toss a beer can at any car event and it's likely to hit at lest two of them!)...so you oughtta be able to find some examples to work from...
Thanx for the input! Good winter project. Ill look for a 350 and trans to put in. Any input or pic's would be great. send to MManno@petersenmail.com
