Seven is the normal for a '30 -'31 'A' Mine for instance is A475**X1, which puts it in the mid part of the 1931 car output run
Thanks, I was scoping that site before I posted my question. I have a reg. that is suppose to be for a 1930 Model A tudor. But instead of 7 digits, it has 8.
It's a current AL 08 reg tag, expires on 05/09. Not sure I want to try in Ill with the extra digit. I don't know there search criteria process.
did you see how many vin numbers were produced in 1930? i think the end of 1928 was 800,**X something..so i guess it is possible to have 7 digits..but 8?..mmmm dont really know for sure. you do know the vins start with a star..than the letter A than at the end another star.. like this *A 123456*..are they thinking the last star was a O or something?
On the paper work it goes A12345678. So no *'s. I sure in some states it wouldn't be an issue if they don't check back that far.
All Model A's had vin numbers (actually not vin numbers but manufacturing numbers) 1927 1 to 5275 1928 5276 to 810122 1929 810123 to 2742695 1930 2742696 to 4237500 1931 4237501 to 4830806
is the car complete? is the body on the frame? will you soon be taking it off anyways? if so I would try to see what the "real" numbers are..you dont need a bad issue later on with the DMV. and dont trust that the engine number is the same as the frame..ask me how i know..ok dont ask me..I'll tell you anyways.. my 1928 Tudor came with a bill of sale that had the engines number on it..guess what..it was a 1931 number..not a 28 number..yep they didnt match..im sure there are alot of stock model A's out there that do not have their original engines in them. the original frame numbers are on the top of the left ( drivers side ) rail right after the last cowel bolt hole..you will need to take off the body to see it..and maybe a **** load of paint and dirt.
good post A chopped coupe..no 8th number.. you need to take your body off and get to the real numbers you will sleep better at night
let me say one more thing...when the engine ran out..they put another in..Ford made ch***is sides , as replacement with no vins, motors were exchanged ,rebuilt,junked,ect...these cars went through wwII, s**** drives..there were no new cars for sale..I'm actually surprized at the number of pre-40 cars that survived..I dont know why suddenly///and its been in the last few years that//vins are so important..old guy...just for info...thanks
Frame off, no original motor. Like most frames it was hard to make out all off the digits. I'll post some pics this weekend ( I need to buy a new camera) When I got the frame I also got a 33 reg for a 30 tudor that does have 7 digits. So I been planning on using that since the begin. I found the 08 reg and got the surprise of the extra digit. I thought 08 reg would have been easier to work with. Not the end of the wold. Thanks Here's a pic of my 30
Most Model-A used the engine serial number. But there is serial number on the frame drive side under the cowl (front body). You will the pull the body. Jeff
My 31 Coupe has a A417---- for the Vin. This means it has a 1930 engine. I have ***le work back to 1952 on this car, the number is the same. So it either got a left over 30 engine, or it was changed in the first 20 yrs of it's life. As suggested, I would pull the body, and check the numbers. Mine was from IL, and had to get a IN police check on mine. Good luck, Rich
I see you are also a Mopar guy..same here 68 charger..anyways back on topic.. those numbers were stamped into the frame..they are always there deep into the steel.. think forensic..you know when some murder grinds or files off the numbers stamped on a pistol ..but they are able to get them back..those numbers are still there..I had to do some acid etching of my frame..3 out of the 6 numbers were very hard to make out..but after some experimentation and science..i got em all back. and 2 of them were beat pretty bad by the cowel coming unbolted for many years of driving. theres a Guy on here goes by "Bluto"..Pm him I m pretty sure he was the guy that told me how to do this..worked great..a bit dangerous..but the proper safety equipment and patience and it payed off
Thanks for the info. The Mopar is a buddies. I have a 70 Camaro that I've had for since I was 15 ( 33 years young now).
