So I just bought a new set of wheels for my car. Its a 66 Pontiac Catalina I needed a set of rims because the factory steel wheels were junk. Anyway the center hole on my old wheels were 3 inches and the new ones have 3.75. I wanted to know if this would create an unsafe condition. I need to drive this thing to Tenesse on sun. so I need to know as soon as possible.
well I know when I worked at a tire shop We made the person sign a slip to say they were responsble for all damage to there car because the fitment wasnt right . But I dont think it would be a good idea .....
As long as it seats well, the center hole shouldn't be a problem. I have run wheels on my daily that had bigger center holes with no problems. Now if the hole was off center, that would be a problem.
On every rim the center hole is oversized to some degree so it will clear the hub. The tighter fit on your original rim is there to help it pilot on the hub. The sloppy fit of the wider hole wont affect the wheel's performance, as all of the positioning and clamping force is done by the contact of the lug nuts to thier seats on the rim. Clear as mud? Ed
I was told by a tire shop that aftermarket wheels aren't "hub centric - don't use the hub as a strength point) so the difference you have should be ok as long as the bolt pattern on the newer wheels are correct.
