I'm having trouble with the gear shifter moving when I turn the wheel. It feels like it's in the top of the column. Something is catching it and dragging it to neutral or low depending on which way I'm turning. The steering wheel has had a little play since I got the car. It hasn't really caused a problem until now. Has anyone had to deal with problem before?

You need a new steering column bushing, and same for the shifter, not too much work to swap. Check on www.lcoc.org for info, as I remember I got mine from Kanter. There is a search function on Lincoln car owners club (lcoc)

Where is that steering column bushing located? I think I'm looking at what you're talking about but not sure.

Could it also be the upper steering column bearing causing this?
