Does anyone know if the rules allow moveable airfoils to control direction on these things, or must steering be done via wheels?

I think this is the record for piston powered.wheel driven cars, while Vesco's is the record for wheel driven cars-but they use a gas turbine to drive the wheels.

They don't used "tires"-the "rollies" are all metal.

I remember seeing a do***entary about an unmanned rocket sled going 6,426 mph and thinking….DAMN
I’m impressed by speed; it doesn’t matter if it’s in the air or on the ground

I wish them luck.

yikes. that's scary. I opened up this thread because I thought it read "land speed record over 100mph"... We're building a 27T 4 cyl to run over 100mph in the vintage cl***. ha ha.

If you want to break the 1000 mph barrier, then haul the Space Shuttle over to Black Rock, lay her on her belly and light her up. At least you'd wouldn't have to worry about burning up.:D Crashing may be a problem.

Why? At some point, this just gets pointless and ridiculous. They might already have crossed that point in my opinion. Just do it until enough people die I guess and then you will know it was too much. Some where along the line, just basic physics, reality along with some luck with variables dictates the limit and I guess they want to find where that is. Hate to see that a few deaths might be what is required to make the point that just seems a bit pointless.

The speed of sound actually depends on humidity, air pressure and temperature,so it is variable. At sea level, the speed of sound in dry air at 20 °C (68 °F), is 343 m/s. This also equates to 1235 km/h, 767 mph,or 1125 ft/s.

So when a record is attempted, the speed of sound will need to be calculated for that time and place. And yes, if it is exceeded, there will be a sonic boom. Observers heard a sonic boom on both ends of Thrust SSC's record run.

25. Im impressed by it, still more impressed buy something that is pushed along by the old reciprocating piston but hey....
I got to meet Andy Green the 'pilot' of SSC, he was a pretty down to earth guy, not full of himself for being the fastest man on the surface of the planet. Pommy Tornado pilot and skydiver. Meet him at the military parachute nationals and jumped with him. Wonder if they will look for another pilot for this one?

great some british guys with tons of money to blow on a jet car thing (16 million I dont know if it includes the donated eurofighter engine)come over here and go 1000mph with a wingless jet. I think it is cooler when a guy in his garage builds his own car and breaks a much much slower record.

I'm wondering if they will bother with a roll cage and 5 point harness, etc. or will they just depend on the drivers **** puckering enough at 1000mph to stick him to the seat?

Most of the same people who are unimpressed with the 1000 mph effort are the same people that egerly followed the Breedlove - Arfons see saw in HRM. But now they are cooler than that. That is the ones old enough to read HRM at the time
