I am doing a '62 Corvette that will be painted black and I like the idea of using a black surfacer and sealer under the paint so that when it gets chipped it will show less. I'm currently using the black featherfill G2 directly over the bare fiberglass and filler. I want to use a urathane or epoxy surfacer next but can't find one other than one from "the kustom shop" the same folks that sell hot rod flatz. if you guys could help me out it would be great. Thanks Brick here are some older pics from when I was making itching powder
I'd sand the G2 and spray a reduced epoxy primer as a sealer, then shoot the paint. If you sand through the G2, you can just spray more and sand again. If you want some cheap epoxy primer, I had good luck recently with Kirker black epoxy primer. I think it works pretty well and it's easy to spray. I'm no expert though.
Sherwin Williams makes a good black epoxy primer/filler/sealer. Kind of neat stuff, it has a semi-gloss or a little less finish when sprayed and dulls down when sanded. Built in guide coat. Doug
Kirker has some epoxy primer/surfacer. The other option is to use HOK KoSeal II in black. Thats a great sealer for your basecoat.
Excellent Product-$120.00 gets you two sprayable Gallons- http://www.southernpolyurethanes.com/Photos/spi_070202_0256-2.jpg
Glasurit makes a black sealer.Sikkens makes a black tint that can be used as a sealer or a primer. The only difference is the activator used. When used as a sealer its as good as it gets.I've used it on a m/c tank and had gas lift the topcoat, but it didn't get past the sealer.
PPG carries DP90 and PPG's shopline carries a black epoxy jp377 Marhyde(makers of that yellow primer we all love) makes a black highbuild primer surfacer.
Yup, maybe the best or right at the top. Sikkens "Colorbuild" (urethane). It's a urethane primer system made up of black, white, red, blue, green, and yellow tints. The tints are actually high solids urethane primer and can be mixed to make almost any color primer or sealer by adding the appropriate activator. The black and white tints can be used by themselves and the other tints need to have some black or white with them for stability. It has fantastic build and it "sticks"! It's not cheap but it is pretty good "bang for the buck" because of the high solids and superior quality. You get what you pay for, and then some. http://www.sikkens.net/default.asp?sid=65394&pid=437 If your black featherfill is ready for topcoat, then just a good black sealer (epoxy, urethane, or other compatible coating) will do under the color. The featherfill is a very good choice on the bare glass body. overspray
