Yep ... that's exactly why I asked 49ratfink for the confirmation ... cuz' $800 would be a good deal for a decent pair of the "THOMPSON" style covers ... but a bit high for even a real nice pair of the "M/T" style covers.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=71295&highlight=thompson There's a photo of some early 327 covers I have. Dan
The early Thompson's were #3276000. I have a set like yours with the same number (3376001), but they are not shown in '71 catalog. There is an engineering #33760016 listed in the MT sales number cross reference guide though. That is indicated as a "Fully ribbed (less M/T name)", sales#241-12. The pic in the catalog shows what should be engineering #103R-50B (first version with knockouts, sales# 241-1). I'm ***uming these were introduced between '69 and '71.
Didn't mean to hijack your thread. I checked 3 Pontiac sets, and there are 2 different engineering numbers. I have 2 sets of 140R-58B which have Holley Mickey Thompson inside, and 1 set of 140R-11B that do not. They appear identical. The sales # is 241-3 in the '71 catalog and in the cross reference guide it is engineering #32792001. If you have a set with 32792001 cast in them, I would ***ume it is an earlier version.
They appear to have the same bolt pattern, and the catalog says they fit Pontiac, Ford and Chrysler hemi's.
Here's a couple of shots of both sizes of the old M/T breathers. The bases measure 2 5/8" by 1 5/8" on the small ones and 6" by 2 1/4" on the big ones. Dave http://www.roadsters.com/
If anyone want's to sell a set of the bigger ones I am in the market, PM me please! I need them to finish off the blown '40 Willy's for a friend and don't want to use mine! I bought some old Offy's 90 deg. but they are to long to mount on side of covers Thanks, Lon
I have three M/T Pontiac covers. Got one super cheap as a single, figured sooner or later I'd run into another single. That was like 10 years ago...
i just took a look at the set ive got and they dont have any spots to knock out for oil fill like i thought , just ribs , and they 327 on the inside , im guessing the must be pre 68 since no knock outs right?
These are the best MT's i've seen. Wish I had a pair or 2 of these. Not the ones that were emblazoned with MT Logo's Really what SBC covers (or any other should look like in my humble opinoin) should be. Movin/on
Thanks Mr. T for the insightful replies. Seems like you're the resident expert. What's a pair of restored Ponchos go for ($) thru your website? Thanks also Kiwi Kev for posting the M/T catalog pages.Very interesting!
The standard twist in breathers piss me off as they always allow for the discoloration around the breather area. Still, I cant bring myself to attach additional breathers to these. I want to rework ****sters finned oil breathers for the early sbcs and attach them so the breather caps stand off of the valve covers, just havent yet. If you have some vcs that are beat up, have cracked bodies or broken fins, make parts out of them. Here is a very rare battery hold down Why leave them hanging on the wall...
What would that be? I only know the basics of how this stuff works. BTW the inside is finished just like a part would be.
M/T embossed hemi covers came in a couple versions. The "common" (?) ones were the BREADBOX style as shown on the digger at the top of this page. They also had a "chamfered" set very similar to the 426 style ones show in that same add. Those came in Mag as well as aluminum. The chamfered ones helped when doing engine swaps in tight areas - which was the mojority of them!!!
I'd love to swap in a pair of these in my '55 Pontiac. It has a late '60s 400 with late '60s M/Ts, but I like the looks of these better. -Jonathan
