I met a new friend from Australia today. He is a friend of a friend and is in Kansas for some aircraft training and had the day off. So I picked him up and we went to a small car swap meet In Hutchinson, Kansas at the State Fairgrounds. Not a big deal at all but we had a good time. His name is Paul just like mine so naturally we got along fine He is building a 28 Model A Tudor hot rod he bought from a Hamber. We met up with my brother in law and also saw a few Hambers there too. Not many Model A parts were to be found but there were a few. I took a few photos to share with you. Nothing Earth shaking here just a nice fall day with temps around 70 degrees, walking around a swap meet, talking with friends, and good hickory smoked BBQ for lunch. Who needs more than that? First photo shows Paul from Perth, Australia who would have easily won the longest distance traveled award.
these weren't for sale but were very cool. It was a good day to drive your hot rod to a swap meet. I was in my big dually truck.
Here is some of the stuff I bought including a pair of rare 1928 Ford Model AR wheels, some slots, and a cool sign for Poverty Flats patio. And dig the collectible cards from Monogram models featuring the Barris collection and Roth cars. Circa 1970 or so.
No kidding. They really get around! I always wonder if anyone ever stays home in Australia. Now if I can get my mates Lab Rat, Doc Watson, and you Panhead Pete to come and visit me.
I was at the swap meet but I missed ya Paul. I saw the neat grille shell and the coupe body was at the booth of a HAMB'r "jrsiron" Steve Blackwell, good guy not sure if the body was his or not I didn't get to talke to him. I picked up a set of 17" wire wheels for $20 and a set of stagger bolt valve covers for my 56 sbc motor for $10.
I keep spending $$$ on the digger and the wagon so I behaved myself and skipped the swap meet. :-( Looks like fun.
Yes the wheels are different, the AR center dish is shallower and the edge/lip of the dish is angled where as the A wheel has a squarer lip and a deeper dish. From what I know the AR is the 1927 and possibly early 1928 manufactured model A's. The early AR wheel will fit the later hub but not the other way around. The reason the wheels are different is that there was a law p***ed requiring the e-brake mechanism to be a separate mechanisim to the foot pedal mechanical brakes of the day which caused Ford to re-invent their rear brakes and hence a change to the brake drum shape etc which in turn required a different wheel center design to cope. In addition, the hub caps changed but I believe that was just cosmetic nothing to do with the brake issue. I am starting to sound like a wardrobe restorer!
Gday Pov. looks like you had a great day , and thanks for the invite . Right now I can't think about anything but finishing my shed .....
Well shoot I was at that same swap meet and I even heard there was a fellow HAMBer looking for me but nobody seemed to know who it was... Hey non aussie paul did you guys do the cruise thursday??? I figured weather kept you guys undercover...
Yeah, I was the Hamber looking for you. Saw some of your fellow McPherson College Restoration students and asked about you. Hope you got some stuff bought.
Nope walked away empty handed but I did almost throw down for some of the 94's that guy inside had... He wanted $65 a piece and said he sold 16 that day alone... I wasn't real impressed with what was left over if thats the case.
