It's finally time to re-wire my Dad's Craftsman table saw. It's a separate motor/table unit, and is now still on cloth wire. My question may be real simple: I want to rewire with a ground (three wire cable). What do I ground TO?? The supporting table is wood, so do I screw a ground wire to the motor and saw unit?? This seems right, but I want to be sure. Thank you, Cosmo P.S. For those who might ask, the saw and motor are probably from the late 40's.
Not an expert, however I have wired some stuff and I would ground the green wire to the motor case. Most everything I see today that is three wire grounds it this way. Mike
Yes, you want the green wire to attach to a clean spot on the motor case. That should ground the whole saw. Grounding is a good idea especially on older equipment. You never know when the old electrical insulation might fail. All that being said, I really like older equipment. It was built to last and the HP ratings of the motors were honest!
check the sears site... they have drawings going back a LONG way for most of the emmerson tool machines. also plenty of parts still available for them too
I understand the motor case, but, as I said, this unit has a separate motor, so I believe I need to ground the saw table as well. The motor does not touch the table. Thank you, Cosmo
Run the three wire to the motor, ground the green wire to the motor case, and then ground the table to the motor. That will work and should prevent getting shocked from either the motor or the table. Hope this helps. Mike
