I use PhotoShop, I don't own a tablet but I've used one in a graphic design cl***, it makes is a lot easier to be precise. I'm no pro, but you can do some amazing things with the software. I've never used corel before though, so I couldn't compare them.

    Get adobe's creative suite.
It comes with Photoshop (Photo editing)
and Illustrator (Vector Art) and In Design
(For page layout and publishing, you'll
    probably never use this).

The Photoshop/Illustrator combo is what you're after.
Corel is not really a photo editing program. It's actually
a cheap rip off of Illustrator. If you're working on a mac
PM me, I may be able to make Xmas come early this year.

edit: As far as a tablet, it's personal prefference, I don't like them.
I've been in the Design/illustration biz for 20 years, I would suggest
trying one for a while before purchasing one. It definatelt is not needed.

  4. Dane, what are you getting the digital programs for...?

Are you wanting to photochop cars, do page layout, logo design...?
I ask because each task has a program that would be best suited for it.

Personally, I say get Photoshop and Illustrator. I've been a professional digital painter and illustrator for over 20 years. I've used all sorts of programs. Those 2 are the best.

As far as tablets, sure you might not need one, but let me ask you this... Which do you think is easier to draw with? A brick or a pencil...? I prefer a pencil.

I haven't used a mouse since 1997. Tablets all the way.

I use Adobe Creative Suite, but if your looking at Corel Painter (not Corel Draw) Ive heard it is very good (better than photoshop when it comes to brushes etc), although Its a long time since I've used it, so hopefully someone using it currently will chime in.

I use a Wacom Tablet all day, even for just navigating browsers and like robschwager I dont use a mouse anymore.

If you are going to be doing digital painting, Id look into Corel Painter, otherwise stick to Photoshop.

I use corel at work and adobe at home. I prefer adobe because I learned on it and it is just natural to me. Hey Schwager show him what you can do with Adobe and I bet he'll be sold

    Good thread.

    I´ve got Photoshop 7.0

What programm would be the best for making some t-shirt designs? I guess I´ll need a vector design programm and a tablet?

  8. Hah! Okay.

Even though it's "O/T" for these boards, this is the kinda stuff I do all day long with P-shop, Illustrator and a wacom:

I agree with Rob, but I've heard that Painter is great for digital artwork also (Look what Jeff Norwell does with it!). By the way, I wanna be just like the Shwag when I grow up!

I use both Corel and Photoshop on a regular basis. I would recomend you buy either a Corel Draw/Paint suite or a Photoshop/illustrator suite, either will get you everthing you want. I think the corel suite is less expensive then the photoshop suite.

    Try this:
    http://www.gimp.org/

It's free, but definitely NOT a POS. It's been around about forever, and many people swear by it.

Seriously though - give it a shot. It'll give you something to work with while you save the dough for whatever you buy... if you ever buy it! You may like Gimp enough to stay on it! :D

    Shiver me timbers! ;)

  16. I tried GIMP, if all you want to do is Photochopping cars, it's great and free...

If you want to break into the graphic arts biz (you must like ALDI's mac and cheese),

Then go with the Adobe products, it's more the standard with print shops.

  18. If you are wanting realistic looking airbrush effects- A Wacom tablet with Painter is the hot setup.

You can use a Wacom with Photoshop-- which you will need as a great all-around graphics program-- but Photoshop (at least the version I have) doesn't allow for the spontaneous/ sensitive brush effects that Painter does.

Painter doesn't quite have the same functionality that photoshop does...so it's trade-off, plain and simple.

The Wacon tablet I use(6+yrs) with Photoshop has a pressure sensitive pen. I can use this with an airbrush or brush tool and get a small to a big line or fade just with the amount of pressure I put on the pen tip. Is that what you meant?

im going to start getting a grapich design degree thast why im asking. i figure get the stuff now and get it figured out before i get to cl***es so im some what ahead. Ive drawn all my lifeI really like the Rob and Jeff Norwells things come out.

Do i need a huge tablet? From what i have read Wacom is the best.

  22. Well, yeah- but Painter and Alias Studio Paint just have a far more energetic feel.

To me, my Photoshop stuff always comes out a little stiff, or it just takes alot of work to give it that energy-- (but it's not real at that point, it's contrived to look that way)

    Know what I mean??

    BTW-- very nice work

If you have any Mac questions, feel free to hit me up, folks. It's actually what I do for a living (consultation, service and repair). :)

I really don't sell anything, but I have tons of free advice. :D

I use corel draw, but then again, compared to some of the stuff posted in this thread, my skillz are not that mad.

  26. Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Cable and Deadpool.

Welcome to the grown up table! Now, please p*** the corn...

Nope. Just get a Wacom 6x8. I have 3 of them and recommend them to everybody. Anything bigger is just ego stroking. Anything smaller and your hand can run off the tablet when you make natural, sweeping drawing motions. I've used almost every tablet on the market at one time or another, and even helped beta test the Cintiq many years ago.

IMHO, a 6x8 is all you really need.

...and you've made Corel your beeyotch with that smoking work you do bro!
