I listed my 50 Dodge truck this week on there( keep in mind it's rough) and I got a email to day.The email said there this guy was a agent for a buyer and would like to make a deal on the truck.I emailed him back and told him to read the terms of the sale that was the deal($500 buy it now and it has to be picked up )I also gave him my number so we could talk in person This was earlier today I got home and found that my truck was sold. The guy who email me was the winner.I got a email again from this guy it seems that the buyer is in Africa and will be sending a truck to get my truck.I'm going to get a cashiers check for the truck and it also going to be extra for the shipping. This all seems to weird to me it's a $500 dodge truck that doesn't and has no title. Is there some scam going a round like this has anyone had this happen to them?

    Happens all the time.

Usually, they want to send you a check for $10,000+ more than whatever you are selling.
You are supposed to cash the check and send them the difference.
Then the check bounces and your screwed. [IMG]

An easy way to spot them is poor spelling and grammer.

Search the archives for "scam" to find several xamples.

BAD DEAL! Standard scam, the check will bounce and you are out the $500.00 plus whatever "extra" he added, and maybe the truck as well. What was his feedback rating?

You better email eBay and tell them you think (KNOW) that this is a scam. I just clicked on and found out the winner has a (0) rating and joined eBay TODAY! Sorry this had to happen to a HAMB member, it also gives eBay a black eye. They should relist it for free for you. Best wishes, Bob ............ONE MORE THING In your next listing state that you only want bidders with 10 or more feedbacks bidding, that should keep the riff raff away.

Thanks I just emailed e-bay I knew it was to good to be ture. I will have to remember to add a few new things to my listings for now on so I won't get screwed. It used to be a good place to deal with but this is going to be my last auction for awhile too much bullshit.

eBay has been real good to me, don't let one SOB mess with your future deals. Change your ID if you want to, your feedback will stay with you and list more stuff. There are tens of thousands of good people out there. You aren't out a thing except your time on the keyboard.

Have him send American Express Travelers Checks. [IMG]
    Or American CASH.
And of course, you would send him a personal check for the balance, most quickly. [IMG]

If I ever get one of these scammers, instead of sending him a personal check,
I'll send him a couple dozen smaller checks on a closed account.

So he'll get hit with NSF charges for each one. [IMG]

This has been going on for quite some time, but some people still fall for it. On a local Boston based legal aid radio talk show last week, a guy who "sold" a restored Indian MC on ebay called the lawyer hosting the show.

The MC "sold" to someone who used the "Buy It Now" feature for $20,000.00.
The bidder emailed that he was in Germany and that he would have an overnight mail service deliver a certified $25,000.00 check, and would he send $5,000.00 of that to his "friend" in the US who would arrange pickup, crating and shipping of the MC.
The next day FedEx pulled up and delivered an American Express Certified Check for 25K. The guy took it to his bank, and brought the check to the manager, who pronounced it a genuine check. The seller was worried, so he asked the manager to be sure, and the manager said he was sure, so he deposited the check, got a cashiers check for $5,000.00 and sent it to the "shipper".

Four days later the "buyer" calls, and says he is no longer interested in the MC and will he refund the $20,000.00, so the guy gets a $20,000.00 check and sends it to the "buyer".

A couple of days later the bank calls to inform him that the check was a "very good counterfeit" and that he owes them $25,000.00.

The lawyer on the talk show thought that he would have no obligation to pay this $25,000.00 to the bank as they said it was a good check, but he did ask the seller if he got anything in writing about the check being 'good' (he didn't).

From reading about people who got taken by this scam, I'm not sure he would win a lawsuit from the bank, but I'm pretty sure he's going to be needing a lawyer real soon.

The other popular scam you see alot of on e-gay is people listing a car for sale at well below market value...often with a BUY IT NOW of $9,999.00 or less.

What they do...at their rent-by-the-hour computer internet terminal in Hong Kong between classes...is draw up an listing with a stolen photo of some expensive or well-known vehicle...could be a vintage drag car, a Boss 429 Mustang, a Scarab speedboat, a Piper Cub, etc, etc...

You can spot them the same way...poorly written English with odd descriptions of what's actually in the picture. Often times, the picture(s) have just been lifted from a site on the web somewhere.

The way it works is...some sap says "Hell yeah I'll buy a mint Boss 429 for $9000!"...then he sends the seller his money...and gets nothing in return! Transactions under $10,000 attract less scrutiny from authorities, so most of these bogus listings feature a "Buy It Now" price of just under ten grand.

There was an article about this type of scam in one of the news magazines maybe a year ago...they actually interviewed an annonymous culprit in Hong Kong...a college kid who did this sort of thing all the time with his buddies for kicks...the way he tells it..."if someone falls for it...great, we get big money. if not, no loss!". He laughed it off as a kind of game!

Like I said in another post...I quit e-bay a few years ago when the Flake Rate got to 80%...it's nothing but a scammer's free-for-all anymore...I just use it to look for pictures and stuff...a kind of research tool.

The old saying still applies though..."If it sounds too good to be true...it probably IS!". Think about that before you agree to 'sell' your car to a guy in Africa, or before you send off that $9000 check to become the proud new owner of Ohio George's Willys, and you'll be fine. Use common sense...and treat EVERY bidder and seller as if they are GOING to rip you off...and more often than not...you'll be right!

Just thought I'd ad that if you deside to sell "worldwide" on eBay you will get a chance to meet some real nice poeple. The ones I've sold to couldn't send payment fast enough. Check feedback before you bid or ship something. The great people far outnumber the scammers.

<font color="green">If you run your auctions WITHOUT the "buy it now", at least you could go to the next highest bidder and offer it to them at their last bid when the winner turns out to be a joker.

Maybe if we knew this jokers email we could make him alittle miserable?

    [/ QUOTE ] <font color="green"> It's true, I sold a bicycle seat to a dude who lives in Greece.

I just KNEW it was a scam, he bid twice what the damn thing was worth.

I told him I would ship it to him AFTER I received his payment and it cleared, he said no problem.

It took a month for him to get it because he wanted it sent some weird class that keeps everything under lock and key until the recipient provides a secret number at the other end.

    He was thrilled with it.

It was interesting though, he lives in some village over there and didn't have an address, just his anme and the name of the village.

    Talk about small town!!

I bet we could start a thread based on the oddball stuff that has gone across both ponds. Just because something is common here doesn't mean it isn't sought after in other countries. I've had many items with only one bidder, "Mr. Right" can be anywhere in the world, and their postal service is not as great as ours. (That is not a wize crack about Canada)
