Thats pretty cool! I collect old metal lunch boxes and I have a few of his. They are the most desireable. I never knew he was in to cars either.

My family had a Yellow Jacket like the one pictured. Molded plywood hull made in Sweden. Very light weight and very fast but rough riding in choppy water. I had not seen reference to those boats in many years.

  20. An old SNL news item from Weekend Update:

"After the death of Trigger, the horse of famed Western singer/actor Roy Rogers, the family announced that the horse would be stuffed and mounted, and displayed in the Roy Rogers museum.

In related news, Dale Evans, the wife of Roy Rogers, announced that she would also like to be stuffed & mounted...though not necessarily in that same order."

Yes...yes...in poor taste...but it cracked me up at the time. :D

He was one of my hero's for many reasons. I believe he was genuinely a good guy.

He was a real man and not just a character. A few years before he died when in his 60s-70s?, he was in northern Virginia for a Roy Rogers restaurant opening. He was being heckled buy some *** in the out door audience. He ignored it for a while and I think the *** got personal...He finally saw enough and started down off of the platform to go kick his ***. He almost made it before the shocked security realized what was happening and was able to restrain him. It made the local news that night.

  22. Me too Tommy. I had my folks take me to a Rodeo at Madison Square Garden in NY just to see him and Dale. Had the whole cowboy outfit when I was about 10. A couple years later I bought my first Car Craft magazine and never thought about being a cowboy again.

Years ago, cousin Dennis went by Roy's museum? to look around and see Trigger and all.An employee asked if he had any questions and Den inquired if Roy was around?
"Hold on.." Out walked Roy and was the nicest hero anyone could ever wish for.
    Roy was a cl*** act.
Dennis still bores us with that great story.
    Happy Trails to everybody.....

The Roy Rogers museum was in Victorville Cal. The Rogers lived in Apple Valley Cal.

In the late 80's and early 90's they used to have cl***ic car shows at the museum.

  25. I used to drive past that museum and never stopped in...wish I had taken the time...never knew he was a car guy...that's cool...

I met his son, Dusty, at the Shepard of the Hills Cruise in Branson this year. Dusty asked my cousin if he could ride in Kevin's GTO to lead the Midnight cruise down the main drag. He gave Kevin a couple of challenge coins. The only way you made it to the graveside service when Roy was buried was to have one of those coins. He was gracious and proud of his father.

I've got a "Nellybelle" Jeep. It was painted red by some Daddy years ago. The bell is the only thing I know is missing. You can still see the Roy Rogers Double-R-Bar Ranch screen-painted emblems on each side with the "Nellybelle" above it.

Got it at the Pate Swap Meet the second to last year it was at the old grounds by the Pate Museum of Transportation. Lady had several kiddie cars whihc I looked. Didn't care much for any of them but as I walked away I turned back and the sun illuminated the "nellybelle" under the red spray paint. I rushed back and gave up $35 for it.

I agree, Roy left this world a little better than he found it. Wish I could say that!
