my grandfather was a big fan of the BURMA SHAVE signs, they were all over the highways of the southern states i was told. they had little sayings like this: [past old house] [take it slow] [let the little] [shavers grow] i am trying to complile pictures anyone have any? this is the one i made for my shop........kinda cool huh?
Saw the train! Tried to duck it, Kicked the gas. Then kicked the bucket!! Some where I have a book of all the phrases through the years.
cool site i realy like this one We can't Provide you With a date But we do supply The best darn bait Burma-Shave
. . . . A goupe of us took the biked out west on route 66 early this spring and saw a few. We tried to get some rolling pictures, but had no luck. Not sure if we did get any, I will ask.
Seems like the signs were in groups of 5 singularly. The first sign had the first line and so on until the last sign said Burma Shave. Prolly close to 1/4 mile apart. Try this for the lines but no pics of signs: http://www.allowe.com/Humor/book/Burma%20Shave%20Signs.htm
A highlight of our trips to Washington state were those signs, us kids would compete to see who could read them out loud first. Anybody recall the "x number of miles to Tiny's!" of the same era in Wash.?
My family and were just talking about these last night! There are a bunch in the World's Fastest Indian movie. There is a set by my house on a bad curve you have to slow down for, I'll try to get a pic for you one of these days. They read: Speed was high Weather was not Tires were thin 'X' marks the spot Burma Shave Before that it said: If daisies are your Favorite flower Keep pushin' up those Miles per hour Burma Shave Here is another site with history and info: http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/hpolscrv/mthomas.htm <CENTER> </CENTER><CENTER> </CENTER><CENTER> </CENTER>
Geez, I miss those things . When I was young (in the '50's) my dad was transferred back to Ohio 3 times . We , of course , drove Rte 66 each way . I loved those signs . I also made my parents stop ( or made them wish they did ) at almost every reptile zoo , Indian curios shop , cave , mine and meteor crater along 66 . We even had the desert canvas water bag on the front of the car .
When they were around all the time my dad usually drove too fast to read them let alone get a good photo with my Brownie Holiday Flash.
In Cashmere Wa., little yellow signs as back east as north dakota. maybe further. And as far south as tuscon. Kind of like old "Harolds club-Reno" signs too.
