Just seen a cool show on PBS about the Lincoln Hiway.Showed the start of it in NYC, and the end in San Fran. Lots of pics. of old cars and gas stations, and just a bunch of history from across the USA. They will more than likely rerun it later this week. Check it out if you get a chance..

Hey, I just finished watching that myself (couldn't take watching Obama on all of the other channels:mad:). The Lincoln Highway thru PA is just about 15 miles north of me, and we travel it all of the time between York and Chambersburg (only way to go). I would love to take a cross country trip (especially by bike) before I p*** over. Not likely to happen unless I go by myself cause I'm the only adventuresome history nut in the family.:D

I watched it in the garage working on my 66 F250 and I am glad they did not have Obama on,I am too cheap to get cable or the other pay TV products so I watch PBS when they have interesting shows like this. Jeff

I drove Highway 30 from the west coast to Gary Indiana, and then continued east to Baltimore in a 65 Ranchero, got thrown in jail in Kearney Nebraska for speeding, cost me $20. drove I 80 in 86 same trip, got pinched in Kearney again, I think it was the same cop, I'll take 40 or 90 next time.

I was lucky enough to catch the show too.

In addition to seeing old cars on the old highway there was lots of great old architecture along the highway. Several of the people in the show commented on how unfortunately much of these great old building are getting torn down.

i thought that was pretty cool too except the fact that the old dudes were on those Italian scooters, that was lame. I would have much rather seen a roadster or anything but a foreign funk machine! it just killed every picture they were in not to mention the plug at the end. Cheesey.

What a great show, didn't know about the "seedling miles" of concrete pavement ****tered here and there on the route ("planted hoping more would grow"). Must have been nice to hit one after slogging through a muddy section. Just loved the fact that the Lincoln Highway was the first national monument honoring Abraham Lincoln, and the result of a gr***roots movement of private citizens, not government.

I watched the show as well. My office sits one block off the Highway and there are lots of people around here really into it. That show did a great job of discussing some of the lesser known facts especially about seedling miles and all of the alternate routes thru the years. I liked how they talked to business owners along the route as well.

This spring we drove the LH all the way out Gettysburg from Canton, Ohio for the Jalopy Showdown in the '32 roadster. Needless to say despite the rain I really enjoyed the trip!
Post #4 of this thread details my trip...

I saw the second half of it after watching our next President, Obama, tell the truth about what the USA has needed for most of the past half century.
I think taking the 6 across Nebraska is much nicer than the I-80.
Stop in Minden and tour the Harold Warp Museum. It's a smaller version of the Henry Ford Museum crossed with the old Knott's Berry Farm Ghost Town.

I am more into old highways then anything. I research old maps, books etc...to follow original alignments as much as possible. Not just tje Lincoln Highway but the Dixie Highway, Old National Road, William Penn Highway etc....There is nothing like cruising on these old roads that are full of history..... and a lot of it is fading fast by demolition, by-p***es, road widening, and what they like to call progress. Get out and enjoy these old roads and see what you can.

I watched last night after this thread started. It goes through Lancaster and Gettysburg here in Pa, kind of an east coast Rt.66. Thanks for the heads up.

I caught the tail end of that program last night ... seemed pretty good ... so I set the DVR to record it in HD later this week.

In the Bay Area city of Livermore, there's an old Lincoln Highway garage still standing ...

    ... it's a museum now:

There's a stretch of it still open here in Omaha that's paved with brick.
