so any one that knows or cares what ive been trying to do heres an update on the 89 toyta straight 6 into 50 chevy project ive been working on.
after last weekends speed bump of my new rear axle not fitting me and fathack decided to see if the stock 3 speed will bolt to the toyota bell housing. and it fits damn near close enough to make it work. who woulda thunk hell even the chrome fuel pump block off plate from the stove bolt fits the toyota motor perfect. so after getting all excited that my work was just cut in half and the hamb drags creeping up fast, it was now time for the wireing. so i got all the diagrams needed and looked them over and devised a plan to just hard wire the computer and what not so i will just run the things i need to make it work. well one of those things ends up being the speed sensor on the toyota 5 speed trans.. doh!
so with hardley no time left to get a new axle and fab up my bags and what not to it. ive decided to bow down from the crazy project and leave the rice to the ricers. so the chevy will not make it to the drags but i may throw my 69 chevelle together just so i dont have to drive my civic there. at this point im very fed up witrh this car and after trying to put in 5 difrent motors and having each one back fire and not getting to drive the car all damn summer. ive decided just to take it easy on it and go back to square one with the car.
who knows what i may try for a mill next.all i know is i need a break from this damn car for a while. and with being in the middle of buying my first house and finaly getting my own garage progress my be a little easier these next few months ahead.

    later.....

Welcome to the Club, My Brother...are we a pair??? [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

(Though I've only tried TWO engines in mine...and will never drive it!)

You got the drive and the guts...and then there's that deal we were talking about earlier with another HAMBer...you might not make the Drags with it...but they'll sing your praises for the Ages if ya drop that "new" engine into the old 50 Chev!!!

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Hope the house deal goes through for ya...it'll make things easier with all your projects and ideas for sure!! It'll be cool to see you able to bang out some cool shit without worrying about driving all over lower Michigan to get to all your rides!!!

Fuck...I've heard the Chevelle run...pop that exhaust back on the one side, grab those engine parts from Tim, drop the sheetmetal onto the front and go! I believe Jay will have your back with a new chase vehicle to the Drags!

  4. Dirty, you wouldn't have cared for the whimpy chevy 3 speed anyway. They were barely strong enough for the little 216 babbit pounders. I'd shelve the project until you can find/afford the Toyota 5 speed tranny.......of course, that means you get to do a rear axle transplant too, which is again, a good thing.

Take a break. House with garage will make things simpler. I just got through building a shop, first time in 15 years have a decent place to work. Spent all day taking apart a 50 Ford building for my wife. Can't describe the joy of moving my roll around next to the car & reaching over to get a wrench.
That engine looks cool in your car, go with it. Looking forward to meeting the "gay Michigan bitch crew" at the drags!

  7. Dirty....when I was putting my 50 chevy together, I had zero bucks for a while. I was given a 83 Gutlass rear axle for free. It had terrible 2.29 gears in it with no posi but it was free! I measured it every way I could and checked ratios and specs for different trannys. I ended up using that Gutlass rear but it was almost 2 inches to short per side. I hadda use wheels with a positive offset to counter the narrow rear end which was kinda cool. I had a pair of 8.5"x15's with a positive offset of 1.5"....worked like a charm. I made up spring pads with a 4" depth and drilled them offset to work with the stock 50 chevy springs. welded them directly to the axle tubes after setting pinion angle and it all worked together well. I had welding gas and wire and scrap pieces of 3/16ths metal invested. Ok, it took a few evenings of time too but I got the old girl on the road. BTW, I was able to find a Saginaw 4 speed tranny from an '80 Pontiac Sunbird [Poncho's version of a vega] in my friendly U-pull-it for $35....had the needed low gears in first [3.50 ratio] to work with the high 2.29 rear gear.
I used pieces from a mid 70's ford pickup for the heavy clutch linkage needed for the 12 inch clutch....cheap!
You can do it with a little planning and some spare time. I did. Here's a photo of the poor old scarred up 50 delivery.

yea the rear end i got is from a s-10 the backing plates are like 1/4 inch from the frame when the bags would be droped. thats a little to close for my liking so ill just hunt down a better rear end and maybe still use the toyota motor. but this other motor i might be getting will look even cooler.

With those 2.29 gears and enuff ponies you should be an instant member of the 200 MPH club at Bonneville! [IMG]

  11. if you have the gutz and the nutz to put a toy 6 in a 50 chevy you've earned a round of applause and you've got what it takes to finish the car

have a few beers, break a few things (worthless junk), take a little time off, then come back swinging

Take the s-10 rear back to the u-pull and trade it for a S-10 4wd rear, it's the correct width...with better gear ratio selection and some are posi to boot....

It's no biggie, all you gotta do is make the engine ECU think the trans is in neutral so it'll allow the engine to rev it's head off. We use a little VDO contol module, small black box with a couple of relay circuits or whatever in it wires into the speed sensor circuit. Fifteen bux at the local electronics store. I'll check and see if there's a number for it.....

Carps is your friend. TRUST ME on this one! [IMG]
Don't bail on the project...it's too cool AND the engine is a distant relative to the original stovebolt as well.
    DO IT.
I doubt you'll regret it and you'll have something unique besides.

Glad to see you still hang around CARPS! Could you help the young fella out with a diagram for the....NEUTRALIZER(tm) interface? He's a good kid by all accounts.

Ha! See! I told ya there had to be a way to 'trick' the computer!! [IMG] [IMG]

I cut that piece of steel for your trans adapter the other day...give me an exact center-to-center spacing measurement on the upper two bolt holes and I'll even drill it for ya!

When can I check out your buddy's...umm...you know..."vehicle"??? [IMG]

If it is what I hope it is...I can fight back the tears, Bro!

So...is the Toylet back on line???

Do I have to do a quick wire-up and motor tweak on the Chevelle???

(A buddy of mine has a couple of 100amp GM internal regulated alternators if you need one).

At least ONE Chevy will run and drive this Summer! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

damn i forgot the chevelle needed an alt too. sonabitch. well im tore i dont know what one to tackle now to get done in time. any suggestions from the penut gallery??? [IMG]
i have the mounts all done for the toylet i just need to have u make that spacer thingy and then slide the motor and trans into place. but the hard part would be to wire the bitch. it would have been so easy if my buddy i got the motor from would have restrained from cutting the harness 3 inches from the connectors to the ecu. stupid facker!!

Ha Ha...I live CLOSER, Fast Elvis! [IMG] [IMG]

Bang out the Chevelle, Bryan...it already starts, runs, moves and stops under it's own power...we can wire up the essentials, get the motor running right, hook up the cooling system and slap the new fenders and hood on in the next two weeks...if ya wanna give it a try!

I think you'd have more fun driving to Mokan in that than the Honda or the Ramcharger!! [IMG]

THEN we'll get your Chevy done...with either of your new motor options! [IMG] [IMG]

Let me know if you still want the column shift stuff from my 49 before it's too late!

better save the shift stuff hack. just in case u know. well we went and looked at "the" house tonight. its perfect!! double lot 2 block off of eight mile in hazel tucky. right by i-75 and every thing. should cut my drive down from hour and a half to 20 min or so. best part is its got a two and half car garage and enough room in the privacy fenced in back yard to put 5 cars and still have a nice back yard bbq area deal. were putting in a bid tommrow on it!!! i think the chevelle will be te way to go. can i get those parts from tim on tuesday afterwork or sumtin....

  22. Hey, dillhole,

I got an alternator or 2 myself, if Hacks don't work... let me know what ya wanna do about the tranny and stuff too. I don't work weekends anymore, so maybe we can get together and swap that stuff.

BTW, did you go to Brett's this weekend?

I think the dude who burnt the ECU for your Civic could prolly master this toyota thing, maybe? [IMG]

And you better be here the 18th of September too!!!

Hope the bid goes through on the house for ya...I dated a gal that lived at I-75 and 8 mile...so I know the hood fairly well, Dude!!!

I'll pull the shift linkage stuff of this week sometime for ya...

    Cheaper?
How about throwing the Toyota box in the backseat, in neutral, and wire it up?

I've been here all along, just a little more mellow than when I was younger.[IMG]

I need to know a few details about the donour vehicle, model and year, especially what trans the engine was originally connected to. Can't be sure I've got the exact right wiring diagrams but we should go close enough to figure it out.

Carps...his engine/tranny are from a 1989 Toyota Supra...it's a "7GE" or something like that? (according to the sticker on the front). 3.0 litre DOHC I-6 with 5 speed.
