I'm interested in building a rat rod. I've seen a lot, got the space, a little time, and can turn a wrench fairly well. I love working on cars and driving fast but I've never taken on a project like this. This looked like a great place to get some advice and share my hobby. I found out about it from a friend that frequents here. I look forward to reading your stories and learning from the guys that have already been there.
RayRay, The term "rat rod" is frowned upon around this site. This site is more geared towards traditional cars/trucks, etc. You can expect numerous flaming posts for using that term here. No, I am not the HAMB po-lice, just giving you a heads up.
hahah I don't chew ***. I prefer to give it good swift kick. Welcom Ray. I'm in Austin now, but will be moving to Houston in a week. Good Luck killing that RAT.
Welcome ray from a fellow Houstonian check the threads on here we are having a gettogether at the darkhorse this sunday. It will give you a chance to meet some of the people on here
Look around. Lots of Houston folks here. We don't really care what you call your build but some of these other guys will get their nancy's in a knot. Welcome to the HAMB.
It's your car. Call it whatever you want. If people get bent, screw 'em. Welcome to the HAMB. Best of luck on the project. There is a ton of info on this site. You can use the 'search' function to find a ton of info on old threads. Did I miss it? What kinda car are you working on?
Okay, let's not call it a "rat rod" for fear of hurting someone's delicate feelings. I'll call it Ray's Hot Ride...whatever. It is what it is. As far as what I'm building, I haven't pinned that down yet. I have a 58 Nomad that I'm trying to get rid of. I was going to restore it but decided that was going to be too much work for something my heart really wasn't into. It was the "soccer mom's" car back in the 60's and it would probably be the same today. I want to build something that'll turn heads and drop jaws, make babies cry and grandmas run inside. I want to pull up at a light and have that kid in the souped up Camaro next to me pissed off when he sees his girlfriend drooling over my rod (pardon the pun). I'm not going to do that in a restored '58 Nomad station wagon. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of potential in a Nomad, either restored or rodded out. I just hate to see her chopped when there is (as far as I can find) only one other registered '58 Nomad in Texas and it's modded. I'd like to get something dirty that someone has sitting in a corner of the "back 40" and make it clean 'n mean. Maybe an old Model A or even a Packard, soup it up with a ball-breakin 454 or a more moddest (if possible) 350. Put some fat tires on the rear that are barely legal. Maybe I'm just dreaming, but it's a dream that many share. I see others do it and I say, "What the hell, I'm gonna do it too." Thanks for the warm welcome by all. For those that don't like "rat" rods, I won't hold it against you.
Don't miss the swapmeet and car show Sunday at the Dark Horse Tavern. It starts at 11:00 am. There will be hot dogs and music. If you need more info call 713-305-0335
