Ok, so I got a 1953 Bel Air yesterday. The starter was removed. I've got it mounted but want to make sure I've got the wires right. I've searched here and the web but can't find an image. The car is still 6v by the way. This is my first 6v car. I've got two wires coming out of the firewall and four terminals (3 big and 1 small). One wire has a small terminal which obviously goes on the small terminal. The other wire has a large terminal but I'm not sure where it goes on the solenoid. There is also a copper strip that looks like it should go to connect the other two terminals. Which terminal on the solenoid should the wire go? I think it should go on the left if you're in front of the car and the copper strip should connect the other two. So, am I close to being right? Can anyone post a picture of their starter solenoid. Thanks very much in advance for any and all help and/or suggestions. Here's a pic for helping out.
The solenoid does two things. 1-It engauges the starter gear to the flywheel. 2- it then connects the electric to the starter motor. That small wire energizes the electro magnet, causing the bendix to engauge the fly wheel. It also connects the 2 large terminals completing the circuit to the starter motor. The copper strip goes from the one large terminal to the starter motor. The other 3 wires connect to the 2nd large terminal. One of the wires is the battery pos cable, the other 2 go to the electrial system. One of them to feeds the internals, dash, lights, ect. and the other one to the starter switch. Thats basic, but think about it, whats happening, and what your trying to do. And its all one side of the electrial system, thats why the GROUNDS are so important, there the other side. Ice man
