I can't believe how nice this thing is coming out and how shinney that black paint is under all that haze! Check it out!! I'm just going to clean this puppy up and run it! Got a flathead guy that's going to help me put the aluminum heads on and get it running so I don't screw things up too bad. I'm beggining to think I did pretty darn good on this car for the $7,000 I gave for it! :)

Just a question from an old wrench twister. Why would you swap heads before getting it running and finding out what condition the engine was in? It seems like the productive thing would be to get it running and sorted out and see what you have and then swap the goodies on it.

Nice looking car and it looks like you got a great deal.

My hood has a split in the same place on the drivers side.
I haven't quite figured out what caused it...except it's at the end of the hinge and maybe a stress point.

The PO said that the cast iron heads were retaining heat on long drives and causing over heating. He had bought the correct (for 35) aluminum heads and had them totally refurbished and machined, bought a new gasket and nut set and had taken all of the stuff off of the engine to get it ready to remove the heads. Seems like it would be a good idea just to keep going to a) put the real purdy aluminum heads back on it, b) replace all of the gaskets, c) inspect the engine and valves while the heads are off and d) freshen up the block paint while it's apart. That is the current thinking anyway.

    James427,

Looks like the car was a "diamond-in-the-ruff". Looking really nice and I love the color of the wheels.

When you get a chance send some pictures of the motor with the heads off. You mentioned the owner said "the cast heads were retaining heat"................it the car was overheating I doubt it was the heads. Do you still have the original cast heads, and if so how about a picture. When you get the heads off take a look at the water p***ages in the block, and did he get new water pumps to go along with the new "refurbished" aluminum heads. Flatheads can overheat, but not because the of the cast heads retain the heat...........there has to be another reason and maybe more experienced people of this forum can expand on this.

Really nice, and I love the car, you did really good!

    Man that paint looks great.:D:D:D

Please do not screw it up by repainting it. Its only original once. After that its just a repainted car. JMO.

The heads that have been on the car for years are still on it, so yes I have the cast heads. The two waterpumps are off and they look real good, but not new. Here is a pic of the engine the way I got it and the new aluminum heads.

wow cant believe how well thats starting to look. it was worth every cent you gave the guy.

if you are going to replace the heads I would replace the water pumps too, get the original ones rebuilt from skip haney http://www.fordcollector.com/water_pumps.htm no point putting heads on for it still to overheat and you need to start pulling the engine apart.

I would also take the opportunity to run a high pressure hose down all the holes in the block to try and get as much of the silt out the block as is possible. on a flathead i just had built the rear two cylinders were completely encased in casting sand from the factory - its all cleared out now but i dont know how it ran cool when it was so full of sand.

I just used one application of Presta Ultra Cutting Creme and a high speed buffer then wipped it with a cloth. When I'm done I'll go over it with a swirl mark remover and a foam pad. It should look wet after that.

Thanks guys for all of the encouragement and support. I'm going to need it because there is a whole lot of car to buff here. So many angles and edges and curves. I've never buffed a 30's car before!

I was really shocked at how many people were saying that this car wasn't worth the 7K the guy wanted for it, saying how ones in the same shape come along all the time for 3 or 4 grand. I don't think they knew what they were talking about.

Buffed out and touched up, with new gl*** and engine running, this car is basically done. It doesn't need any more than that. Be sure to post pics when it's finished.
