I get asked all the time on what it takes to fit the Lincoln brakes I sell to Ford spindles.I was putting together a front end and decided to take pictures!

Here you see the flat spot on top of the backing plate.

Standard aftermarket "round" spindles 1937-41 Ford.
These are CE forged units, little differences between manufacturers.

Damn these ain't a bolt on! It doesn't fit.

We need to remove the upper edge of the spindle.
The backing plate has a graceful bend in the stamping, not a sharp 90.

Marked for photo where I cut it off..5" grinder with a skinny cut off wheel.
(Only because my 9 axias 240 volt 3 way self feeding diamond bit mill is in the shop for a tune up.)

Dress it a little with the grinder.

Hey ho ! Lookee it fits !

This front end is using CE bolt through steering arms.
See the pretty little lock nuts? Hold the head with a wrench and get them not to hit the inside edge of the spindle.

Brand new 5x5.5 hubs, slip right on..

And did you notice the 2" wide shoes? Well they match the new 2" wide, radial finned Lincoln drums. That slip Right On .No more swedging!

    That's it.

    thanks eric,

Ive just bought this setup from eric for a customers car..its really lovely stuff, all is really nicely machined and fits together great.
Ive got 37 round spindles for this project, but might hold out for some square backs, and save the roundies for a ford drum front.
Im assuming square backs wont need as much (or any?) grinding..

Buy stuff from riley! hes good people.

Hmm,Steve doesnt know everything! (he really does) not.
Square spindles with the repop brakes need a little fitting.
I have a greasy set of squares I don't yet want to modify.
The top flat of the spindle has a little crown to it.
That will need to be ground down,
The top kp boss will just interfere, tried to show in the pictures..
So a bit more grinding is needed there.

Does anyone know if these repro Lincoln drums will fit in to a '35 wire? - it looks like they will. I have '40 spindles and '51 backing plates, hubs & drums for 2" brake shoes. The drums are too big for the wires so I'm looking for a drum that will do all the jobs! Any ideas other than the Lincons, if they'll even fit?
    Thanks
    Nick

The Lincoln drums work with wire wheels.
best to use the little wire wheel support ring.

F1 truck brakes will not work with wires unless you use a bigger spacer.
    I think Wheelkid has 'em.
    Does this help?

    Right on Mr.Vaphead. Looks great.
I ran into this after receiving my brakes from Bob Wilson. I remember phoning Reggie Hill to ask his opinion on this & he assured me that the world would not end & that it was ok to start hacking the poor little spindles to bits.
Worked like a charm I tell ya.

Thank you VAPHEAD, very useful. I've just realised you're the guy behind Riley.com. I emailed you last night direct to your site asking the same thing, so apologies for duplicating my question. My set up looks like the middle picture, of the 3 above, and that original drum won't fit the '35 wire. I'll therefore give you a call about buying a pair of your repro Lincoln drums tonight - I'm in the UK. I already have some of those spacers (from Vern Tardel), new shoes and cylinders, so I just need to sort out the drums.

  15. Lookin good Eric, me thinks that Ill be using these for the next project.

Thanks for takin' the time to post !!
