In Calif you can fill out some paperwork and you can get the information you need. They notify the owner before they release the info I believe.

If you know anyone who's a cop , they may be able to run the VIN through their system . It worked for me , now I know where my 1st car lives :) ...

Before you ask a cop to look up plate information, understand that it's technically a violation for him to do so and could result in him losing his job.

Here in Wa, if you go down to the DMV, and explain that you wish to register a car with no****le, they'll give you a form to fill out. YOu fill it out, and mail it, it comes back a few weeks later from the "main office" with the last registered owner's information.

Check it out at the Conneticut DMV.

I had a friendly state trooper that knew I wasn't doing anything flaky find the address for me. I don't think they are supposed to do it so be discrete about it and if it works don't let the new owner know how you got it.

PS I was heart broken when I saw it.

I should've said that , but figured someone wouldn't just walk up to a cop & ask outta the blue .

I was thinking more like if you asked a friend to look it up, you might be unwittingly putting him at risk of problems on the job.

I wouldn't expect anyone would be stupid enough to ask a strange cop to look something up, either.<!-- / message -->

Remember if it comes back as a stolen car I believe they are obligated to confiscate it, not sure but I've been told this.

I've done this a bunch of times. Call any private investigator in the yellow pages and you can get whatever info you want for about $75. No hassle, nothing illegal, they just make you sign some release that says you're not trying to get the information to find someone to kill them.

I was gonna buy some 27 plates at the t swaps here in bakersfield, the guy said they were clear, so I made a call and told him, you may wanta knock these down a little, they belong to a 98 ford explorer. It's nice to have friends in the right places.

May sound strange, but not long ago I was calling around for parts for my wifes rig.
On the phone with NAPA and he needed info I didnt have and asked for lic#.
Not sure what he used, but he had vehicle info and owner info that I did not give him.

Old thread that was so wrong in so many ways from the get go. Read and understand the Privacy act.
Your cop buddy will get fired for looking up this info for you Even to the point of just finding out if a vin or plate is still in the system for anything but absolute legit reasons.
The state of Arizona won't even confirm that a vin in a****le is correct when you as a regular citizen have said****le in your hand and are on the phone with them. That is invading someone's privacy.
Throw in, do you want some idiot showing up on your front porch looking for his old car because he found you through dmv records? Think about it for a minute. When you find out how they found you you are going to be the one raising some hell.

I don’t know about now, but back when I was connected to law enforcement, we use to run “ 28s and 29s” (recorded owner and check if it was stolen) all night long! Things have probably changed a little over the last 40+ years! Lol. But even back then if it came up stolen, you had to do something about it. The owner info was used for what ever!
I have asked my current cop friends all the time to check if a vehicle is stolen before I buy it. Then I go directly to the DMV with the seller and get it changed over ! That way I know the seller is the legal owner! If he refuses, I don’t buy! So far none have been stolen, but my cop buddies tell me if it’s stolen they will follow up on it and I tell them fine! I don’t want a stolen car. Checking to see if a car has been reported stolen before you buy it is a valid reason to check 29s. Ownership, might be a little less. Just my experiences !

So let's see; virtually anyone can get access to your home information, deed info, phone numbers of all kinds, not to mention what you look for on the internet, etc. but it's an egregious violation of privacy to try to find out the registration history of an old car. Another example of the ridiculously upside-down logic in today's society.
I get calls and texts inquiring if I want to sell my LA house constantly. How do they get my info? Mailers and ads for medications that no one is supposed to know we need. Ads pop up for things that my wife and I only discussed verbally, not on any device, how can anyone believe that there is any such thing as privacy these days?
Privacy, these days, is simply one person trying to avoid a lawsuit when asked a simple, most times innocent question.
My cop buddy told me he can verify if the vehicle is in the system and/or if it's stolen but he can't give any further information without being in violation. I think he basically has to justify his accessing the system.
I think the P.I. route is interesting, I'd try that.

Well said! I searched my house on the net! It gave me a lot of info, including how much I paid for it 22 years ago! Unbelievable!

I was looking to purchase a car just 1 yr over the HAMB limit a few months ago. It looked too good to be true for its year and originality. I tenetively made a deal for it. He showed me all the paperwork and vin. This was on a Saturday. I went home and for $9.95 on the web gave the company the vin and nothing else. In 20 minutes I received the names and addresses of the 5 owners, 3 were in the last 6 months. The car was from and****embled in the northeast and non of what they seller told me was true… Monday I called off the deal.

Oregon will tell you if a vin or plate is registered. They wont tell you to who
