So, I saw this boat tail 36' and I've seen a boat tail roadster, I'm just wondering who started this style, was it ever a production style or only custom work? Does anyone have pics of other boat tail cars. The article said this car was built coping a car built for Errol Flynn ( robin hood).
Boat tailed cars have been around almost since the beginning.... Stutz Duesenberg Auburn Hispano-Suiza and a tulipwood-bodied roadster by Nieuport (1924) Rolls-Royce Bugatti 1971-1973 Buick Riviera Pontiac Grand Prixs were also somewhat boattailed!
I remember the Rivieras, I never really thought of them until you mentioned it. I think the style is awesome.
The car in question is a 1936 Ford Roadster/Boattail built by Automotive Specialties in Washington. It is a fibergl*** body. I purchased this company some years ago after this car was built and still have the molds for this body. I am currently building one of these for myself, however it will be sectioned 3 1/2" for a sleeker profile. The Errol Flynn story is seller hype and I send him all the correct info incase he wanted to be accurate about it.
I'm partial to the '31 Auburn boattail myself. But I am also biased as my Father owns one. I can't find my picture though.....
Here is a link to a late model Lincoln resto-rod on my web site http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/lincolnspeedster.htm
Dreadman on the forum here rocks a boat tail or should I say f-1 tail roadster. In some circles rat-tail's are cool. Jerome
I recently acquired the molds used to build this car and if anyone is interesting in a body, contact me.
First production boat tails were 1927 , on Hudson, Es***, Stutz and possibly others. They were copying the style of pointed tail race cars. Before they were production cars you could buy a race car body for your Model T from Mercury and other body makers. The style petered out after 1931. Then Auburn revived it in 1936 to use up a batch of leftover 1931 bodies they had in their warehouse.
