I've got a 2x2 intake for my 57 Packard 289. Right now it's set up for 4 bolt carbs. The carbs that are on it are Carters. They are junk. What's the best carb to run? I've got 3 Stromberg 48's, but I hate to use just 2. What about the Stromberg aerotype carbs? What about the carters? Clark
One good point about the aerotypes is that I think they use the same main jets as 97s, so fine tuning them should be no problem.
Not sure how well they work but the early 50's Lincoln carbs are 4 bolt and they look pretty cool, I'll see if I can dig one out this weekend and see what the measurement of the bolt pattern is if you would like. I'm pretty sure I have on somewhere....I hope.
2G's won't work. I'm want to use the flame arresters I got with it. They fit the smaller carbs. Clark
sell me a 48 ...then you'll only have 2 and it wont be a problem ive seen people bore out the 4 bolt merc carbs to get more cfm's...maybe 2 of those if the motor is bigger? good luck zach
Early 2G's with the small base (Zillions on 265/283 Chevys), Holley or Carter from 318 Mopar, Backdraft Holley from 49-51 Merc/Lincoln (thats the funky one), or even the Towering Inferno Ford/Holley from 52-3 Merc. Older would be the Stromberg AA used on Buick inlines and others.
I don't know what is the best, but I'm going to run 2 of these Stude Stromberg WW carbs just because they look so strange. Small problemo...No room for a conventional air cleaner. Stromberg made the straight up variety WW that will bolt right on also. I've got 2 97's with adapters on my Stude engine now. They work great. I just like a carb that is bent 90 deg. in the middle! Here is Ratbastads post about the straight variety.
My Buick came with an aerotype on it I never used it so I can't say too much about them, I don't know if it is of any interest, but here is what the inside of an Aerotype looks like.
Thats the Holley Model 1901 Towering Inferno I mentioned. Only used on 52-3 Merc flatheads and 52 Lincoln. The Merc, later Lincoln and T Bird Y Blocks used a 4 bbl version, the Holley 2140 & 4000 until 57. That backdraft I mentioned is a Holley 885.
In theory you need apx 460 CFM. 2 48s are 350 CFM. The Ford 351C-2V carb is rated @ 350 CFM & they seem to move along OK.
With that being a Stude motor, Stromberg WW6 are the stock carbs, 2 should work. I think that's what Paul had in his then Stude powered T.
Clark I have some 4 bolt 94's that are just the ticket for that intake. Pm me if your interested. I think they would be the perfect size also for the engine.
