    they were JUNK!!!:mad::mad::mad:

stupid 3-on-the-tree doesn't work, and don't tell me to adjust the goddamn linkage,it's fucked up inside the column.

and i know it's a wagon, but it goes around corners on the doorhandles, and wallows up and down and back and forth and pitches and yaws like a sailboat with a broken keel.

don't forget the understeer, the way this thing plows into a corner it should be painted green and built by John Deere.
here's another thing, why is the engine so heavy?

    it's only 259 cubic inches,but it weighs over 700lbs.

the Cadillac engine they stole this design from was 331 c.i.d.

i'm gonna stick to Hudson from now on :(

    Them's fightin' words!
I'm a Ford man myself though..

Hey, at-least it wasn't Chinese made, it's a genuine American made POS! Look at the bright side.

  3. See if the "Lemon Law" applies and have Studebaker replace that car!!!

You just described practically every car made prior to 1955.
And yet, God help me, I do love them so!

I was reading that Studebaker overproduced everything. They had parts laying around everywhere. It's like they built 1000 widgits if they only needed one. The 59 Lark was made mostly from all the junk laying around. Enough to make 150k of them. Even so, gross profit was less than $200 a car, and net profit was probably $0

I don't remember anyone saying they were well built. But some models had alot of style.

ah yes, you bring back all the good memories..

my '50 had the smoothest collumn shift I had ever driven,
    my '60 had the worst
but with carefull adjustment it worked nice in my T

the shifter uses a light weight tube inside the steering collumn,
the bottom end has a little tab welded to it that controls the levers
it is prone to wear if not kept greased and adjusted perfect

it takes some fancy language to get them apart and back together
you may want to convert to a floor shift.

that model feels very top heavy, and if it has an anti sway bar in it it's about as big around as a pencil, replacing the front and rear with some nice heavy ones will fix all the wallowing.

the anti sway bars and some good gas shocks should help the plowing too

those motors are heavy but they are tough
unless it has a ton of miles on it just a simple rebuild should make it sing again
timing gears, rings, bearings and oil pump

no getting around the fact that you just happen to have the ugliest one ever made though. :D:rolleyes:

here's my old rust bucket two-door
oh yeah, mine had been damaged around the bottom of the tail gate and left a gap that let the exhaust inside, just about enough to kill ya..

and the door latches are the flimsiest stupid design, try finding some that aren't worn completely out..

    Yorgi,

You and I both know, you're spoiled for any other car manufacturer.

Its kinda like Charlie Sheen once said, "Once you've had Ginger Lynn, you're kinda let down with any other woman."

    Hudson=Ginger

  13. Studebaker didn't go out of business. They just stopped making cars. Why? Probably the reasons you stated!!!

Maybe history is going to repeat itself.

    BTW

    They still exist.

I thought it was because they were so goddam ugly. they sure didn't have a monopoly on crappy column shifters, lousy handling, etc.

I don't remember seeing too many stone stock Model T's or Model A's, '32's & up running around on the streets these days trying to keep up with modern traffic...build yourself a modern car...in other words update it...keep the body so it'll look like an orginal...build a hot rod...!!!

The only thing on my Stude that is stock is the body...

Studebaker made some fine cars over the years. They were also very inovative. They just couldn't produce cars in the numbers of the "Big 3" and keep their costs competitive. That's one of the reasons for the wild fins and weird colors. There were things they could do without a lot of retooling.
We had a 1955 Commander Coupe for 10 years and it was a very dependable vehicle...

  23. I thought that was MOPARs in reverse??

    Oh what a feeling....!

LMAO...go tell Lohnes that. He'll get a kick...and likely agree!

Hell, it's an old station wagon...unless it's modified, it's GONNA slalom like an elephant on ice skates.

Column-shift is just one of those things......personally, it's just an excuse to hack a hole in the floor and toss one of George Hurst's beauties on.

In keeping with the oddball personality of the car, I'd toss a built 401 in it and call it a day...just my lousy$.02
