Hey guys, just finished up one of my lengthened 56 doors, took a few hours. I used the front half of my old 55 door, and the back half of the 56 door. A few of yall might remember my 2-door conversion manual. Here, im saving myself the time and money to track down a set of "2-door" doors. Its a pretty straight forward operation, but some careful measureing and straight cutting is a must. After i get it all finished, this door will work great on my 2-door converted 56... all dimensions are exactly the same as a "2-door" door. Feel free to ask any questions you may have. Tanner
The front of the quarter panel is constructed by severely abusing the rear door with cut-off wheels, shears, and a welder... ahaha! here is my conversion manual if you want some visuals.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=228873
yep, i would imagine converting a 4dr wagon would be even easier than a sedan, because you wouldnt have to deal with the "dip" in the body line. And everything is pretty well "in-line" around the doors.
How confident are you that this is identical to the 2 door sedan door? Aside from the door jamb part that's different, do you think your new door would fit into a stock 2 door sedan? I've seen this done to cars where a 2 door sedan never existed, I look forward to seeing how this looks on a finished car.
hey squablow, im pretty sure this thing would bolt right up to a factory 2-door sedan. I used my 57 2-door as a template and measured everything. Although the latch panel would not work with the 2-door B-pillar, the "outside" dimensions are identical... and of course the inside of the door is a but funky... but hey, it was free!
B.A. I am in the process of doing that very thing. Mercury never made a Sedan Delivery in '55 and I WANT one. On my Merc it is fairly easy as the door post is spot welded in. I was fortunate in finding a pair of nice 2-door doors so I don't have to test my skills on this. NICE Work, Tanner.
