I have a '53 Chevy truck and I'm taking the cab off the ch***is. Aside from unbolting the steering box off the frame and leaving it attached to the cab, is there a way to separate it. I removed the 4 bolts right above the steering box by the firewall and then two bolts that mount the column to the dash but couldn't get the two pieces to separate. What am I over looking?
If you are making a hot rod, thus modifying to use a power steering box, I use a sawsall to separate the box from the column. Then I find the steering shaft out of a '71 or '72 GM pickup to fit into the saved original column. It will look stock, which I feel is the way to go. PM me for the lower column shaft bearing part # to use. Hope you have fun on your truck build!
I just used the original shaft and made a double d on the cut off end. Welded on a short end off a later shaft with the bearing. Hooked to an MII rack in my truck. jerry
I dont' know if I just broke mine or what but.... I removed my cab today and I unbolted the four 1/2" bolts and pried it apart from the box. Came right out and then I just pulled it up thru the cab. Now, I had to make a little cut with the sawzall in the firewall so that I could pull the square thru it but my cab is far from perfect and I ain't plannin on rollin to a concours event so WTF..... Maybe I jacked mine up but doing it but I figured that's how it needed to come off otherwise why the hell were those four bolts right there?? Good luck, Ivan
