First off, i give prop's to all you painters out there that do this stuff for a living...or just as a hobby.. What a pain in the ass! 5 hours to lay them out and tape..granted, i went through close to one roll of fine line before i was finally getting some where..but man..give me tin work and a welder any day over this stuff! Anyway, here's some pics.. There's not 'perfect' by any means, and i didn't do the perfect match from side to side..close but i didn't trace them out. I figured they didn't have to be identical as long as they are close.. I've flamed a bunch of shit over the years, but not a car/truck..first one for me.. Tomorrow i'll finish getting the truck masked off and lay on the color..Just a simple medium red then have a friend outline them in white.. Special thanks to BAD BOB for sending me some detailed pics of his Merc. I loved the way his came out and asked if he'd mind if i did mine similar..He was cool and sent me some pics to ponder before i did mine.. So, thanks Bob, much appreciated........ Tony
Don't forget to mask the shit out of everything. Its not like your gonna just wipe and rub any oopsies off that satin and the last thing you want on that shiney dash is red overspray. Looks good! I'll have to catch the news right here on HAMB TV as I'll be heading down to the Cinci-Dayton area for the weekend. -Bigchief.
be sure to retape every curve or any over lap in the tape. most flames i do are new style with out striping around them and there is no room to redo any over spray from under the tape.
Thanks guy's..for the props and the tips. I planned to recheck everything tomorrow before i shoot it..and also make damn sure the truck itself is completely masked off..... 'Chief, man you got that right!! I'll do my best to keep the red off the rest Slag, that HD's BADASS! Tony
Yep, thats where i wasted a roll of the tape.. I tried 50 different way's to lay them out, but it's hard to beat what inspired me to begin with... There real similar, but different at the same time
yep... I stress what slag said... make sure you run a overlap run of fine line.... and take your TIME pulling it off... sometimes it helps to run around all the flames with a exacto to make sure that the paint doesnt bridge over to the tape. ITS WORTH IT. This flame job was all kandy... so the flames started out silver flake, and I used pagen gold, apple red, the mix of the two made the orange. it took HOURS to peel the tape... and I cut right next to the fine line like a surgen. it doesnt matter if its kandy or just base coat... it'll bridge and rip... so tape, and cut , and take your time pulling the tape... wish I lived closer man... looks like fun. Tuck
Thanks Tuck, and Slag.. Didn't think about the exacto..I was wondering about the paint adhearing to the tape and mentioned it tonight to by buddy as i did this.. Sure as hell makes sense..and the last thing i want to do is fuck it up by pulling tape, and flames off as one. And yeah, move closer would ya! Where were you in Kanada again? haha It was fun, but a pain in the ass too if that makes sense..
Nice job! Before you spray, burnish the tape edge. Your fingernail usually does the trick. This will slightly heat-up the glue and make it stick good so there is no under spray. There's a great series of instructional DVD's available from Airbrush Action magazine. Specifically the title, Vandemon's Ghost Flame's. It covers alot of great techniques for layout, taping, symmetrical design, and more. Check it out. Good luck and have fun with it.
Looooks Goooood! - nice layout! im gonna stand up & say it: those are almost tooooo nice of flames for red only! ooooooh i see yellow into orange with red tips striped in blue or white. BUT i suppose you have a vision & with nice flames like that 'any' color works! ----- its gonna look goooood!
Nice job so far. I painted my first ones about a year ago so I know what you mean about the pain in the ass thing. The rewards are well worth it though. I wouldnt worry about them being semetric. Decals are semetric.
looks awesome tony!! like they said watch out for the blue fine line it lifts in the corners! havnt had to flame anything in a year or so man do i miss masking for 5 hours NOT! put up some finished pics when your done..
DAMN, THANKS guys! Well, just called for the red....i'll have it to spray tonight. I've had some experience with the blue tape lifting on curves with other stuff i've done....the area's at the front of the hood and fenders i'm sure will give me some grief.. But that's to be expected.... I'll be spending a lot of time going over these before i lay paint... And i'll post a couple pics too.. Tony
