Hello fellas! I have a 54 chevy bel air with a 235 engine in it. Just recently it started givin me probs. When I turn the car on, it idles fine. But when its idling for a while, it tends to wanna shut off. Then when it shuts off, i turn it back on, n i hit the gas pedal, and it sounds like its choking it evry time i push the pedal in.Or il push the pedal in and the rpms rise up for a bit n then they go back down. Someone said i might have a bad valve, but i hope thats not it. Thanx for the replies, i would appreciate em. -blackblu54
sounds like its running too hot and heating up something it shouldnt like the fuel line or carb remember there right by exahust, dont always trust the hot cold gauge, if its running to hot it may act like that as everything expands and has more friction just some ****ty insite from me
Fuel line shouldn't be anywhere near the exhaust, kid. Look for vacuum leaks. I bet you have some. Then, Tune it up, file the points, new plugs, put another ground from the battery to the dizzy, change the fuel filter, put a clear fuel filter before the pump to catch the rest of the garbage. If the easy fixes don't cure it, then look into the carb, as it may have issues with leaks. The vacuum advance line is an often missed vacuum leak, so don't skimp.
In addition to the other suggestions I offer the following. I had one that did that and the coil was bad. Also check something as simple as a plugged up exhaust pipe.
As suggested, tune it. Pull the fuel line from inlet side of the pump & blow it out after you remove the gas cap & plug the filler spout with a rag. Change the bowl gasket on the fuel pump. Then clean the carb, making sure the power valve is free & check ball is seating tightly. Tighten the manifold clamps & free up the heat riser ... adjust the valves if it's a standard trans. Anything you've replaced with new parts is cause for su****ion.
bad valves cause a miss, popping out the exhaust or carb. sounds like **** in the carb possibly dirt. before you try and restart car right after it dies don't touch throttle pedal get out open hood, put on your safety gl***es and check position of the choke and then manually operate throttle while looking down carb throat and see if it's squirting fuel in a steady stream. good luck
Thanx fellas for all the infoe! The problem was the carb, too much **** in it, that wasnt supposed to b there!! Hahaha, ya learn somethin new evry day!!! Than** again!
