Hot Rods No Bigs-n-Littles Here...Lets See Some Same Size Tires On Hot Rods

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by BloodyKnuckles, Nov 14, 2008.

  1. I like bigs-n-littles and think they are typical hot rod fodder but every once in a while a hot rod will defy all that you believe. I really think there is something to say about a car that has the same size tires front and back. It's just different, dare I say refreshing?

I have been going over alot of ideas I have for my Model A coupe and this is one of them. I'm getting very close to start reassembling my coupe and need to get my shit straight. I would appreciate any comments or pics that you would like to share. I feel I'm on track but maybe not the right one.

    Thanks guys,

Almost the same size! 28" tall fronts, and 31" tall rears.

I figured a Rod like this needed to make a big statement.

And yes, the answer to the question I hear most,
it tracks and steers like a dream, even with the monster tires.

Whoa, at first I thought that was a photoshop job. Nope, I was wrong, someone actually did that in real life.

  12. To my eye, same size doesn't make it on hot rods.
    Ok on customs though.

NotNuRodz good looking highboy pulls it off fairly well, but when you view the car from a front 3/4 view the front tire is gonna look too big as compared to the back.

    Going highboy?
    Put me down for maybe.

    Full fendered?
You need bigs and littles to get the look right whether you're dealing with an A coupe or a Shoebox.
Has to do with filling the wheel well.
The disparity between bigs and littles doesn't have to be too much.

Strikes me that perhaps you're worried about rotating the tires and all that stock car stuff.
Same size tires unless done for a specific look are nothing more than a convenience.

A while back we had a good discussion on this, pics and all.
    Titled: Wheels, Tires, Stance.

Ryan made a good point about the Golden Mean for hot rods vis a vis tire size.

Do a search for the article.
It's within the last 6-12 months.

The answer you seek is probably in there....

I agree 100% with C9. I've seen the looks of way too many otherwise nice rods ruined by the same size tire thing. The big and littles are a big part of what make then real hotrods.

Go to any national event and the one thing that stands out on otherwise great cars (especially fat fender cars and trucks) is that they have same size tires on both ends and usually way to big on the front and cheap looking (usually chrome modular) wheels. No stance and just wrong.

Franekenrodz's coupe might be one of the few exceptions. But the thing there is that the whole package flows together and gets away from the cartoon look.

  14. I know what you are talking about Ron - Big Front tires can look cool. Maybe not the exact same size but some healthy front runners. Stubby (Ton'y Truck) has some big fronts and so does PBRmeASAP's truck. I like them.
I still think you need some rear tires that have authority. Are you running fenders on this coupe?

I can't wait to dust you on the new Charlotte drag way!!

  15. Back in 1959 I had 7.10x15's on frt. and 8.20x15,s on rear. All were wide whites with red wheels.

Yes, this looks great to me. I've loved the bigs & littles & rakes since the 50's, but (for a reason that I really can't explain) I envisioned my build (similar to this sweet looking thing) with balanced tires/wheels & an even stance. My wheels are 16" X 4" with 600/16 bias wide white tires. I should be plunking the cab over the frame before X-mas, so I'll post a picture on this thread when the time comes. The nice part about this whole thing is that you can change it if you don't like it (or alternate, depending on your brain patterns).

Isn't Dan Webb's SEMA car built with same size tires? I can't tell by the pix but it looks like it, or pretty close to the same size tires. Gary

Even though I like b&l, same size look great as well, practical too, same size tires are much better for cornering at high speeds. And, it leaves enough space for the oil drain pan.;)

  22. Same height tires?

Or same width and height tires?

Tire management is ez with same size..

I believe the rake and tire clearance attitude can be done with axles and springs leaving the tires alone

  23. I think a little rubber rake would not hurt that little truck. It does look good as is, but I think the fronts are a little meaty.

6-00 X 16" wide fives all round will probably change the rears for 7-50 firestones next season. 8bb

Many early hot rods from the 30's and 40's were like that. Soooo, historically speaking......BIG maybe.
For me(?), NO SIR, don't like it.

I just sold my 8.20 x 15 tires from my Caddy to a guy in Austin that is going to run them on his '27. I like the look.

I guess "right" is in the eye of the beholder perhaps. Flower has a matched set so the tires can be rotated and therefore last longer. I suppose you need to balance "look" with function some where along the way and if the vehicle is rarely driven....function is not that big a deal.

Now this is exactly what your trying to build right? See I listen.

I think that this one is rad, but I think the channel and reverse rake is what does it.
