Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Ken Carvalho, Nov 15, 2008.

  1. I have a friend in Bodega Bay who's brother lives down south and had to evacuate. No word from him yet.
Godspeed to all that live around there for your safety and possessions.

My brother and I might be moving about 6 cl***ic cars, some are vintage Ferraris, from a friends house in Anahiem Hills, the fire is still a mile away but moving west towards their area.

It's amazing how 3 fires all broke out within 8 hours of each other. The fire fighting resources are maxed out here in So Cal.

  3. Bummer, I heard a little from some out at El Mirage but didn't know that Los Angeles was burning so bad. I hope everyones ok.

All you people are very brave for being there and the people that have offered help are saints. I have never been in such a tragic event as all the past California wild fires and it seems to me that you guys always pull through and help where help is needed. I wish you all the best of luck and stay safe.

News said you guys are on fire too. Be safe.

  13. I just can't believe all those fires out there. How do they get so big so fast? I asked our Agriculture Commissioner here in FL why that is and he said that one reason is that CA doesn't allow control burns to burn all of the low lying brush there. You'd think as many fires as y'all have there they'd have an infrared satellite parked above the state and as soon as they see a spark they'd go put it out before it consumes hundreds of acres. When they had the fires in San Diego last year they showed a guy that had a system that flooded the house with retardant. It had a big tank full of the stuff and a powered sprinkler system. I feel sorry for all of ya out there .. Good luck with them, you always need it.

  14. Good luck you guys...we have went through it 2 outta the last 4 years...be safe and listen to the authorities as these ****ers are so unpredictable and make their own weather

    Hey Fellas,

didn't want to start another thread here. We had a mandatory evacuation for my Parents house. They live up in the Brea hills on the west side of the 57 Freeway north of Lambert Road. What a surreal afternoon going through your parents house trying to determined what is valuable and unreplaceable. Just breathing with all the smoke and ash in the air was hard.

We made a few runs to get their cars and motorhome out to safety first. My main concern was his 1931 Ford coupe. It is his first car he built and is at a roller stage right now. No steering or brakes. We didn't have dolly at the house. So my Dad and brother-in-law (29Coupe) went to go rent one. Maybe 10 minutes or so later the Brea PD was driving around saying it was now a mandatory evacuation. I called my brother-in-law to get their ***es back now. They turned around and got back real quick. My Dad had an old tow bar laying around so he drilled a few holes in the front of the model A frame. We shimmed up the bolts and went old school. We hooked it onto the back of his '64 El Camino and thank God the coupe folled down the hill with no problems.

Here are a few photos, didn't have time to stand around and take some pics.

Drilling the holes for the tow bar. The main reason we didn't do this first was the coupe had no steering and we where afraid the wheels wouldn't track down the many twist and sharp turns down the hill. We also thought we had more time to go rent a dolly.
This is the very next photo I took immediately from my iphone of my Dad drilling the holes in the frame. It was crazy to see these choppers and water dropping planes fly right over you and dissappearing into the smoke.
Here is my brother-in-law Jeremy(29Coupe) hosing down my parents house right before we left on Saturday.[IMG]
Here is a photo from this morning at my house. I live in Whittier, it's about 7 miles from Brea. This photo is of my Dad's flamed 1972 Chevy truck. And yeah, I know there is a joke in their some where. Driving off in a flamed out truck leaving a fire evacuation, DOH!!! Anyways, we are west of Brea and the winds just blew over a ton of smoke and ash. My house is ****oned up with the central air going and it still smells like smoke.

Here is the top of my wagon.

As of 9am this morning my parents are back at there house. No damage to anyone in their neighborhood but, a new flare up just started down by the 57 freeway on the west side. Not good news right now.

    I'll keep you guys posted.

    I'll give it a try...
Two (or was it three?) years ago we had a tenth inch short of record high rainfall, but thats still only about 14".
You get that in FLA in one tropical storm.
All it does ere is make all that scrub gr*** grow really well for about 6 months and then die off the way it usually does.
This past year we got less than 3" of rain ALL YEAR!
California is called "The Golden State" now because that's what color the hills are most of the time, not from minerals in the ground.
I live probably 30 miles form the fire and about 2 miles from the beach and this morning my house looks like Pompei-lite with all the ash covering everything.
I mean chunks of ash up to 1/4" acoss!
Then there's the mountain pine beetle that's been killing trees, making for more dry fuel.
Your control burn suggestion is fine except we're talking about a dry fuel area bigger than the British isles and in the past decade "yuppies" (chainers?, not you, Bad Bob, you're the exception ;) ) have been planting houses all over those previously vacant (and controlled-burnable if desired) hills, so controlled burning isn't possible any more, even if the CEPA would allow it. It's become too risky to the "property".
When there is a fire like this, the fire fighters let them burn in unpopulated areas, concentrating only on property (homes) protection and trying to stop the fire on it's approach to them.
I would bet in a couple or five days, when the wind shifts to the east you won't be able to see across the Grand Canyon from all this smoke. That's the way it would be all the time if we "controlled burned" and Arizona tourist boards don't like that idea...
Back before MAN came here, when lightning lit off a field or forest, it just burned!
Now, we plant cabins and mansions around places, like Lake Tahoe for instance, in the woods and don't cut down or allow any trees to burn so they get so thick that when they do light off and get out of control and have way more fuel to burn than they would have if we weren't there.
Yep, we have met the culprit and it is us.
Just hope all the HAMBers got their families and cars safe. There's a lot of old cars and car guys in that area.

Last night the burning embers would light up a house a mile away from the fire line, the wind just made things worse, houses kept burning up at random.

Everyone on here keep saying to water down the house and turn on the sprinklers..... ummm we've had a water shortage here for some time and the Fire fighters have specifically asked people to not turn on water so that they can have all the water pressure they need at the hydrant.

Nothing's worse than a fireman trying to save the house that IS on fire and has no water pressure.

    How bad is it:

In Sylmar (San Fernando Valley), the fire was so HOT, that it melted street signs and firemen didn't even know where they were on the map. It was so hot in Sylmar yesterday that a couple of fire hoses melted!!!! because the pavement / concrete was so hot. 80 MPH winds there, the worst conditions to fight a fire in.

Luckily we have the best firefighters in the world here, unfortunately, they gets lots of practice.

and got the mobile home park.ITs still going to the west. The fire dept did
agreat job here,it restarted twice but they were right on it and got it out.

I hope that all the HAMBers out there stay safe and don't have any losses. Maybe after all this dies down, some more canyon finds can be spotted.

    Hey Ya'll

My parents live in Nuevo, California out behind Lake Perris in Riverside County. They have a 1/2 acre that is fenced in/ gated and my mother is home all day. If you need to get your car away from the fire they have offered their land. It will have to sit outside but will be safe and looked after. Please feel free to send me or my husband Von Franco a PM if you need help. My dads a car guy too... or you can call them at 951-928-4619 home or 951-217-4234 Claude's cell. (Parents names are Claude and Norma)

My dad's friend who lives on the same street is offering his yard too.

Any help needed, even getting them driven out to Nuevo has been offered by my folks and brother.

Good luck everyone and stay safe. Send me a PM if you need any car help during the fires.

my dads a preacher 'I'll ask him to make a call" so to speak. i'm sitting here in michigan we are currently getting 2-3 inches of snow. 2 of the kids are going nuts with the snow, first dusting for us. i have read the whole thread, amd you guys are just scaring the **** out me. 1/4 mile away this and 100 yards away that. i'm 2000 miles away and worried. good luck to you. i'll have dad say an extra prayer for the cars.

  26. Yeah, I rode my bike out there a couple of years ago. I came down the valley and was amazed at all of that golden gr*** everywhere there. I was thinking at the time if a spark got in there it would make a hell of a fire. With all you said I guess y'all are just between a rock and a hard place. I'll agree y'all have the best fire fighters in the world, they get a lot of practice. My buddy in Santa Barbara had to evacuate and go stay on a boat in the harbor until it blew by. His '59 Caddy would have burned up if it hadn't turned. I hope the best for y'all out there.

Yup, it was a crazy day!!
Me and Sean's sister live about a mile away from their parents who live up in the Brea hills close to Lambert and the 57fwy.
When I was up on the roof, and Sean was helping his dad get the Model A hooked up to the El Camino, you could see the Helicopters and Planes flying pretty damn low, as the fire was not too far on the other side of the hill.
The other creepy thing was hearing the cops announcing to evacuate NOW!!
Here are some pictures of my father-in-law towing his Coupe down the hill.
My wife took them as we were following behind him on our way back to my house.

im far enough away from them for it to not be a danger.saturday i was going up the 57 freeway from the I-210 to the I-10 and i could see the scooper planes circling in the distance. as we get to the part where you can see the puddingstone dam on the east i see this giant plane come screaming over the hill to the west about 100 ft off the ground, goes over the freeway looked as though it was gonna crash right into the dammaybe 50 ft off the road surface, and then it dissapears behind the dam. that was the coolest thing ive seen in a while. ten seconds later wee got a replay as another scooper comes over the hill and does the same thing.i had no idea that they scooped out of puddingstone. i wish i was on the dam so i could see them hit the water, but the freeway view was pretty cool. i imagine the veiw from the winter nationls must have been pretty cool too. anyone see them from that angle ?

and if anyones burned out and needs help with anything let me know... im right here in covina, and happy to help out any likeminded reprobates
