you either neglected to hook up the vacuum modulator or it has 'puked'. This will cause the PG to only operate in low gear. Check for a bad hose/missing hose/bad modulator...

Well a look at the simple things first(not to be a wise *** either).Trans needs two inputs to determan a shift,it needs to know what the rear wheels are doing (through the govener) and what the engine is doing (either a kick down cable/rod or a vacuum modulator) If either input is not working correctly the trans will not shift or shift erraticly.Make shure you have a good source of manifold vacuum at the modulator and check the modulator condition. This is done by pulling the hose off the modulator it self and if fluid comes out of the vacuum ****** the diphram is ruptured and it is inoperable. To check govener operation is more detailed but manuelly shifting it sometimes allows the pressure to byp*** it and allow a shift eventually.Early automatics didnt have much as far as valvebodys so safty was not engineered into them,Ie. They can stick a valve and stay in one gear and apply another at the same time.Try the basics and if all else fails bring it to someone with a little more know how.Hope this helps............Good luck, Gary

thanx for the help guys, another thing i didnt mention was that it shifted from first to second when the car was cold, after it heated up, it didnt go near second. But it stopped doing that a while back. Now if i make a left or right turn, and i give it gas at the same time, it tends to wanna shift, but goes back down to first. Maybe this infoe would mean somethin oter than what u guys sed can be wrong with it. Do i have any other options to upgrade this drive train??? If so, what trans would i use,and what rear end?? thax again fellas!!

Throttle pressure linkage is way out of adjustment.

first thing i would do is check the governer. you can pull it out really easy without pulling down the trans. its on the upper left corner. remove the four bolts to take the cover off (drain the oil first) and slide out the govorner. inspect the metal sealing rings and anything that might be stuck in it. (metal), in with case its tim for an over haul.

Yes without question. The cable or rod actuates a valve in the trans when full throttle or near is acheieved to tell the trans to drop a gear and allow the engine to make power to p*** the guy ahead of you.If the adjustment is off the trans thinks you are trying to hit p***ing gear all the time.A good motor manuel should discribe the adjustment procedure.Try disconnecting it entirely to see if it makes a change. Most likely it will stack shift (shift 1-2 real fast). If the trans reacts this way,you are on the right track.Dont forget to check level of fluid on a level ground when hot and in either nutral or park depending on manufacturer specs, usally written on the dip stick......Good luck.
