Scooter, check out the Gasser Madness website under visitors rides, Tri Fives. Quite afew pics of gasser wagons there. www.gassermadness.com
I know I posted this awhile back but here it is again. My father purchased this Chevy II wagon off a used car lot in the mid-70's here in St. Louis. It had a 396-375HP motor, Turbo 400, 12-bolt with 4.88's and a front straight axle. The used car lot owner actually had two of these cars built with the same drivetrain and even the same color. One was the station wagon shown and the other was a two door hardtop. He was only going to sell one or the other. Being the practical family man that my father was, he chose the wagon so as not to piss off my mother.
THANKS YA ALL for the pics thus far and KK HELL yeah -that is exactly what iam lookin for !!! thats one kick ass ride ! PLEASE anymore like it, or close to it , gasser wagon round-up - post em, if ya got um ! or like mike if ya know where to see them . Thanks mike i am goin there now ...
I kinda dig the body style. I personally don't care for the way way way jacked up stance--to me it looks redneck, but that's just me. LOVE THE ENGINE, and would give some favored body parts to have it. I especially like that he didn't chrome the shit out of everything. Nothing looks "race" like a raw cast blower body. I also really dig the hole-sawed shifter handle. A little too cartoon tall, but I love that idea. And might just steal it. What's downright dangerous though is that he chromed his front leaf springs. Never, never chrome chassis components. Chroming causes Hydrogen Embrittlement (sp?), which basically means the metal can become brittle. That's obviously not a good thing on springs (leaf or coil), leaf spring bolts, spindles or steering linkage. -Brad
THANKS AGAIN all for comin through on this thread ! Some questions i have , since i do not have a nhra rule book or governing body type build race tech rule book .I love the moon type fronk tank but can that actually be used ? are there weight restrictions ? I was thinking of putting the gas tank in the rear cargo area myself and maybe use a small moon tank as the rad's puke tank ?.At what speeds do you actually need a roll cage ? or should i just put one in anyway ? I was thinking yes .I would hate to actually build this gasser wagon and then fine out its not to tech and will not be able to race on the tracks .where is krass and bernie when ya need them ? Right now i have a small yet growing pile of parts and these are some real inspirational shots .If this build does come true it will not be street legal , though i was thinking why not put atleast 2 front bucket seats in for those who may wanna ride .Wow guess i should wake them sign a waiver or somethin too .And ofcoarse this will be at least i hope done on the cheap as much as i can . THANKS AGAIN keep um commin ! On a personal note i dig the over the top cartoon gasser wagon , luv ta see that bad boy make some runs !
Chromed parts can be baked to get rid of the hydrogen talk to your plater .I don't know the exact particulars on how its done only that after the part is plated it gets a special heat treating
get a copy of nhra rule book at www.nhra.com to be safe on the build but you will have to put a cover over the gas tnkand battery if it is in the pass compartment must be seperated from pass compartment. roll bar at 10.90 6 point or if firewall is cut out or floor is replaced then it must be done regardless of time and then 10 pt cage at 9.90 and then comes certification .. yada yada// just build it safe.. and have fun with it.....
Don't get me wrong as the wagon first posted above is cool but it's a bit confused IMO. It's not really a gasser. It's more of the street freak of the 70's but it has earlier parts to it. Not many were running the wide whites in the 70's. You know though, to each their own and there is something to be said for your own style.
While not a straight axle car, my dad's nomad was a real gasser from the 60's when he bought it in the late 80's. Came with a grenaded 409 w/dual quads, 4spd, 5.13 Pontiac rear, and someof the stiffest front coils I've ever seen. Also had 1 pc glass nose on it, dump tubes, guages across the dash and some other stuff I can't remember. It was campained in central/northern NJ and was black with black & yellow stripes on the roof. He sold off the 09' and the rest of the drivetrain and nose, then it was converted to a SBC/T350, steel nose with stock rear & repainted turquiose & white in around 87 or 88. Has sat outside for the last 15 years. Here's how it sits now... Note the old NHRA sticker on the rear hatchglass...
the rolling stock on my wagon are only on to move it around. I have been lookin for rims and tires that are more period correct. i also decided to drop it back down a little in the rear so it wouldnt look so much like a 4x4.
