I am stripping down a 36 Dodge sedan that I got from my grandfathers property. My question is Did they use thse tube axles on any type of hot rods or race cars back in the day? Can you fit Ford spindles to them? I am not sure about these axles but they sure are pretty cool looking.

    Thanks

I have a 36 plymouth with the same tube axle. My old man says they often used them on rods back in the day. I'll try to get more info for you as far as what setup. You might be thinking they put ford wheels right on them since it was the same bolt pattern.

I am not really thinking of using it at the moment but I think it would be cool to use on an old school modifeid of some sort down the road. Thanks Wikster I will be glad to here what sorts of set up they used.

I'm using one under my '36 "Fordillac", on it's parallel leaves. I like the double bend, they've got pretty good hydralic brakes, and, as has been pointed out, use the common 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern.

I've got one too under a 37 dodge. Is there a disc brake setup that fits the stock dodge spindles? something cheap, you know rotors off some car from the junk yard or parts store and calipers from something else but work well together???:D Ron....

    Ron,
I saw the other day where someone used the stock hubs for the axle and installed an Intrepid rotor over the hub (a metric real close to the 5 on 4 1/2" pattern) and made his own brackets to mount GM calipers. Sounds do-able to me, the rotors slide over the hubs on an Intrepid, might have to have long studs fitted to the axle hubs, as I believe they were screw in bolts. Gene

Thanks Gene, I'll look into that. thats just what I am looking to do.
I can make the brackets to hold the calipers,
get some cheap rotors and calipers and fit them to the stock spindle :D

I just cant justify $500-$600. for a KIT from someone
I can see $50.-$75. each for rotors
and rebuilt calipers are around $30-$40
and brackets around $125. would be about right
cant see how that gets close to $600.

thanks again for that info [IMG]

anyone else know of a cheap way to do this???? Ron...

I've spent about $100 so far on mine. Custom caliper brackets, 95 4x4 s-10 calipers and rotors, redrilled for 5 on 4.5. Cleaned up hubs to match rotors, best way? Not on the road yet.

I bought a kit from Ply-Do that slid Camaro rotors and calipers on my '36 Dodge spindles. Used the original MC and it stops great!

I remember reading on a past hamb post (can't find it of course)that sometimes dodge/plymouth shared axles made by chevy. Dodge had trouble with their axles early on for some reason. If you mic. the kingpins chevy's might interchange and are easy to buy brand new and cheap. Joe

    You mean "the camber".

They were a favorite of the circle track guys because they were hell for stout compared to the Ford I-beam. It was fairly easy to clean them off and weld on some perches for a transverse leaf spring and convert to Ford spindles and hubs. (Just drill the kingpin hole in the axle out to .812")

Here are a couple of shots of my '37 DeSoto axle going under my A Tudor. I put "updated" two piston drum brakes from an early '50's Plymouth, because I had some stuff on hand and I know that when they are adjusted right they stop really well.
