Synthetic Compressor Oil ????

With the COLD weather fast approaching - I am wondering if I ought to put synthetic oil in my compressor. My compressor sits in the unheated portion of my garage and in the past I never gave it a second thought (running regular SAE30), but this bigger compressor pulls quite amount of current at startup already - makes me wonder what it will do when it's below freezing out.

Anyone have any experience with this?? Good or Bad.

 

I use Amzoil in both of my 5hp dual stage air compressors, both are in unheated Minnesoat shops, the Furniture shops one is 10 trouble free years of running 10 plus hours every week.
And the car shop is 20 plus years old, second punp, First pump wrecked by spraying gelcoat.

 

ive run syn 10/40 in my compressor for years somewhat for the same reason you do i also run a drain valve like a semi would use it has a cord that will release the water had my compressor for pushing 20 years its still fresh when it shuts off it stops instantly just like when it was new

 

I used to run the Amsoil compressor oil, but now I am running the 20W-50 racing oil. The only reason, is because I like this oil for its superior anti galling properties.

Here we go.
I have always HEARD, that you should run COMPRESSOR oil, normally a straight weight.
Also, it has little to NO additives,(detergents,etc...),reason being that the lack of additives will cause LESS of a problem in the end use of the compressed air.

Think about "silicones", "WD-40", and "paint jobs". Same with "synthetics".

As I said , thats what I have "heard".

Seems within reason, to me.

 

Just bought a 60 gal. twin cyl Campbell Hausfield compressor. The book says use SAE 30 industrial grade compressor oil or Mobil 1 10w30. Since I use Mobil 1 in my cars there is always some around so that is what I am using.

I put klotz syn oil in a compressor in 1975 now the tank rusted through but the compressor is still great.

 

Me too. I get mine from TIP, the sand blast people.

 

A few years back I came across a little electric block heater that sticks on the crankcase with a magnet. Costs next to nothing to run and the compressor starts up just like mid-summer.
I use IR synthetic oil.
