I know opinions vary but I thought I would throw this one out for a vote. I bought this '65 stepside a few months back. I will be shooting it in red-oxide, adding custom cab trim, chrome front bumper and grille, hanging the correct rear fenders on it, yadda, yadda, yadda. It currently has Chevy Truck Rallyes on it (painted turquoise). My question to H.A.M.B. is about tires and wheels: I am thinking aluminum slots or even (dare I say) new American 5 spoke Aluminum mags on the back in 15 x 10's and Super Tricks on the front 15 x 7's. Bigger rear rubber 33x12.5/15 will be used in the rear and will likely require mini tubs, no big deal. What say ye?
I say http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44274 but aside from that, the slots are the way to go.
I like the aluminum slots myself, but its your truck and you should do what you like regardless of anyones opinion, thats just my opinion, hotrodhill.
of what you pictured no,no, and slots=yes. I would ditch the ralleys too. the truck also has 67-72 step fenders on it, if you were unaware...
I love that body style. My first company truck for my sign and striping biz was 65 longbed. The first thing I would do is put the right bed on it and then go with the slots. Mikey www.MikeysPinstriping.com
How about getting some '75 4wd stock steelies, some were 8" wide? Or cut up your rally wheels and put in hubcap type centers? Slots will look good too. I have Centerline imitations on my truck, similar to the lower left wheel picture. Wish I had steelies.
instead of mini tubs try gl*** fenders....I have a set on a 66' C-10 that i have...they give you aprox 2 1/2 inches more under each...I have 15X10 smothies on them with about 14" of tire tread .....no rubbing and no mini tub...oh yea they come with gl*** steps ....and yea I'd go with the slots
Thanks for the replies...... I agree guys on the rear fenders, I already have a set of originals that I recently sunk some '64 Impala tailights into. They are slated to go on the existing bed. I also agree on the slots, except trying to find them in the 6x5-1/2" B.C. is difficult, and once you do they are very pricey. And changing the rotors and rear axle to a 5x4-3/4" B.C. is even more expensive. Anybody got a lead on a set of 15x7's and 15x10's with the 6x5-1/2" B.C.?
Of the three you posted, go with the slots. The others are too 80s. I like the idea of steel wheels with trim rings and dog dish hubcaps, though.
I think that 8s and 275 tires are wide enough for the back...but then I never did get into the whole prostreet thing My son recently put those non-rally 80s 4x4 15x8 steel wheels on back and stock 70s 15x6 4x4 wheels on front of his 59 pickup, with 55-56 chevy car hubcaps. I think it looks decent. I have a set of the 6 lug 15x7 and 15x8.5" aluminum slots on my longbed 59. Got them from a friend in 2000 before prices went up...hunnerd bucks for the set.
Throw disk brakes on it and drill the rear axle to the disk 5 on 5. :easy: Lots more options for 5 on 5. I just got a set of Torque Thrust for my truck and Ansen Sprints for my Suburban. (Both '64)
WheelVintiques sells alot of different steel wheel styles that bolt on your truck and you can get various widths and offsets too. They even have corvette style ralleys for trucks. The stepside beds are easy as hell to tub, just by installing a short wide beds inner wheel tubs. I have seen some stepsides running huge Mickey Thompsons with only stock fleetside inner wheel tubs and correct offset wheels with no frame cutting. As for the wheel styles you listed, really the only ones I like are the slots but only if you had skinnies up frt.......slots come real close to looking like old Halibrands so I like slots alot.
Surfin through some old threads and realized I never posted photos on this thread of the vintage slots I ended up getting for the truck. More data on the truck can be found here: http://talk.cl***icparts.com/showthread.php?t=13928
