Guys... I'm needing to find a steering comumn for my street rod. folks have told me what I am looking for comes out of a Cadillac... If I remember they told me it was a 70's or 80's model. I am looking for a steering column with tilt and teloscopic both if possible I guess I need some help from you guys that might know the specific year models I might look for... and what various model cars I might look for. As I said, I hear from most people Cadillac had them... I also remember my parents owning a car that had a tilt/teloscopic steering wheel. It was an Oldsmobile. Seems it was a late 70's or early 80's model. We have a Junk Yard here locally here where you can go and pick parts off of cars. I was just trying to find as many possible kinds of GM model vehicles that I might use as donors... just gives me more options when I go to the junk yard, and more easiers to find what I am looking for. Thanks for all ***istance
for what it's worth, I recently bought one of Speedway's new painted hot rod column that has a quick release hub. For $69.00 after the Louisville $20 discount, this thing was a steal and worked WAY better for my application than I ever hoped. Look into them. Since the Louisville discount is now past, you should order one thru an Alliance Vendor.
Big Chryslers in the '70's had them. Not sure what models. No doubt Imperials and New Yorkers. Possibly an option on Cordoba ( along with fine Corinthian leather!)
I pulled a tilt / telescopic steering column from a 1978 Cadillac Fleetwood. Thanks to other H.A.M.B members, I also have a wiring diagram for it.
Most luxury/bigger cars of the 70's had them. Olds, Chrysler, Buick, and Caddy. Hell, Vette's even had them.
Cadillac had them as far back as '64, maybe earlier, but I've seen a '64 that had one. '69 and later had the ignition switch on the column. There were several years that big Chrysler Imperials used GM tilt-tele columns.
Try an early C4 Corvette 1984-1989. They have the traditional GM tilt column with tele. Pre-VATS would be best, lets say 1984-1986, but myself, I would still use a VATS type if it is a good deal. 1990 and up had airbags and are no good. Salvage parts prices on the early C4 parts are typically cheaper than the C3 parts also.
No, they didn't. I saw two last week, both without tele and one didn't have tilt. Any Cadillac other than a Cimarron should have tilt/tele. Hard to miss as the tele lever is on top of the hub. These were also available on highline Oldsmobiles and Buicks like Toronados and Rivieras.
It was an option in all of the big GM cars most likely from '67 through the '90s. I've seen them with, occasionally, and usually without. Parted out a '69 Toronado that had one and got $125 for it on eBay. FWIW, that's the first year with a column ignition switch, I have a '68 cluster that has an ignition on it. And since you can swap parts to make most any RWD GM key-switch column live where any other one is, they could end up about anywhere I think. If you know anyone who does demo cars that might be the place to get one cheap. The Toro and Eldorado ones have a U-joint in the steering shaft, factory.
I had a 66 caddy with one with out the key, i have a 63 for my 50 chevy that,s only a tilt without the key hope that helps
Thanks teddyp, I now know where to get my tilt for the 52 Coupe, without the key on column.. My Olds tilt/tele has the key/dimmer (UGLY).Think tele needs the orig wheel to work? 52 csb
Most any GM 62 or 63 up you could get a tilt, through '68 with no key on most models. Some of them are big money though. I ******ed one in the you-pull-it a few years back that someone had stuck in a '66 Pontiac - but had gutted the turn signal switch for some reason.
Teddyp is on the right track. almost any make car had tilt or tilt/tele from the mid 70's up. But the real desireable ones were the early 60's models, they still had the smaller diameter tubing for a housing (same as 30's to 50's), no key on the column, and the looks that look "right" in older cars. The later 60's up ones were bigger diameter, and clunky looking!
Yes it is difficult but not impossible to adapt a different steering wheel to a Caddy til/tel column. We had to have a friend machine up a new hub and a horn ****on. The horn ****on replaced the lever. You twisted the horn ****on to lock the tele part. I think we used a Firebird wheel with the detachable hub.
I'm using a tilt/tele column out of a 67 cadillac with a 64 caddy wheel in my 40 dodge. I just need to figure out how to get rid of the column shifter bump so it's smooth. later shawn
Thanks tommy, will phone about cad column tonite.I don"t have olds wheel for it. Got any pics.. 52 csb
