Folks Of Interest Operation: Christmas HAMB

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HotRodChassis, Nov 18, 2008.

  1. There are some little schoolkids out here that take up collections of stuff to send out to the troops all year.
I'll try to contact someone that can give out some more names of service members, or let me know what all they need.

Maybe they can help move some stuff out for us in the Hi desert.

I can help collect stuff/ have stuff dropped off once I have that info.

  2. OK, what if there is no drop off point around you, can I mail, let's say, DVDs somewhere?

  3. Kevin,

Sign my company to the list of Alliance members!
I'll check with the local ****nal Island in my neighborhood for their contact information and forward it to you!!!

youre right bro, i just got back in october from the Lincoln and i got a goodie box from my hometown girlscouts and it was the greatest feeling ever. just to know that someone you never met took time out of their day for you was awesome. i sat down and wrote a thank you letter to each of those kids that put a note in the package. i think this is a great way to show love and support, and in this case it deals with hot rods! haha, the USO, at least the one in Dubai really does alot to help out us guys so if you can only donate to them it is a worthwhile cause.

Cool, I'll box some movies up and send them to the nearest drop off point. If these guys weren't out there doing there job, there's a chance that I couldn't be here making movies and building hot rods.

Nope, those items are fine! There's no BX/PX (Base Exchange/Post Exchange for those Civilians on here :D) when you're in the middle of no-where. I'd keep the stuff gender neutral though. Toothpaste, toothbrushes, non-scented deoderant (you don't want Akbar smelling Axe Orion when you're trying to sneek up on him) :)

I'd agree. Just pick the one nearest to you and mail it there. Mind the date when we have to have the stuff to the American Legion or VFW and how long it will take to mail. You may want to call one of the drop off points and see if they don't have what you're wanting to send and see if you can't just paypal or use a card to pay for it there. Also, keep checking the Drop Off Point list, I've been adding regularly over the last few hours.

Awesome Doc. Send me your contact information and I'll add you. Maybe we could even trade service members addresses and some Aussies could get stuff from us and visa versa. I think that would be cool. Knowing folks care is one thing, knowing the Hot Rod community around the world is thinking about you would be even cooler!

I'll be posting Biz-Mon as a drop off point as soon as he sends me his information. You could send your stuff there.

I'll get an email or website information for the American Legion or VFW where you could contribute money to help ship stuff. I'm sure they'll need it. And if someone PM's me from a drop off point that doesn't have a shipping location near them, perhaps they'll ship the stuff theirselves?????? That's more work, but it may be a possiblilty.

Hey - I will totally be into donating DVDs and magazines for the guys - how many should I drop off?

I will be in town for the Chevy Vette Fest this weekend and will come by and give em to ya.

I am glad this was made into a sticky - I would have never seen it.

In the future - please email me directly cause I would always wanna help out in situations like these.

Sometimes I dont get to look at the HAMB for a week so stuff blows right by me and I find out too late.

I will call ya to make sure you are going to be around on Friday.

    Later

    John Wells

Vintage Torque Magazines and DVDs heading to the troops!

We'll be there until about 6pm John. Feel free to stop by. Also, if you need to be there later than that, let me know and I'll have one of the guys stay late.

I should be there right about rush hour - perhaps a little earlier

this is a great idea - my neighbor is heading to Afghanistan in 1 week and my brother in law will be going to Iraq in Jan / Feb. Neither are car guys - but in this way I can contribute to the guys out in the field that are doing the real work of keeping the country secure.

Hopefully this will be a bigger event every year.

While I am at the Chevy Vettefest this weekend I will ask around and see if anyone else wants to contribute.

If anyone travels alot and has a collection of those little shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, lotion bottles, soap, shower cap (no, it truely is not a huge condom:rolleyes:), that are available in your hotel room, now would be the perfect opportunity to "use" them, IE: DONATE them to the troops.

If anyone knows any knitters, there is a lady in Ohio doing Socks For Soldiers. My bride knits beanies and socks almost every day for them. They also take the toiletries I steal from every hotel I have stayed in around the world! Fruit Stripe gum got her a letter back from a CO once. He hadn't seen it in 20 years and had to explain it to the 'kids' in his troop!

If you are in a hotel at any time, grab all the soap each day as it will get replaced. I make a box and send it all at this time of year.

Glad to see everyone jumping in.

good idea and im going to donate.

if you think a drop off location in the Northern CA Bay Area makes sense, let me know. We could either do at my place or i'm sure Alex is down to collect stuff at Gambino Kustom's.

    Good idea.

Cool. I'd suggest askging Alex if he's ok with it. That way it's at a shop. You could go in and help to divvy stuff up.

Cool. This will work great for those Drop Off Points that don't have an American Legion or VFW/USO near them that offers shipping. I'd encourage you to use the Americna Legion/VFW/USO for the shipping. They've been doing it for YEARS and are well versed in the in's and out's of getting the troops thier gifts by Christmas Day.

If you are a Drop Off Point that is going to use the USPS for your shipping, I'd advise that you make that call today or tomorrow and try to beat the rush of people that still believe the Christmas Holiday starts AFTER Thanksgiving Day. Like me. :D
