I am looking for online companies that sell automotive interior supplies such as leather, vinyl, tweed, carpeting, trim, insulation (jute mat), etc etc. I plan to make my own door panels and carpet for my 63 Chevy Wagon and looking around at a few places but would like to buy in bulk since I have 3 other vehicles to make door panels and carpeting for. Also, for backing plates on the door panels, where should I buy PVC for this? I hear this is better than the back board that is originally used that can get weat and warp or deteriorate. Thanks for any info on interior upholstery.
i believe the company i have bought some stuff from is called rod doors, they cary pretty much every thing !
I use a local So Cal place, but they're pretty big, ship everywhere and have a site: http://www.a1foamandfabrics.com/site/index.cfm
Although I have not purchsed anything from them, I find that these folks have been very helpful with my questions and seem to have good prices, selection and information on their website: http://www.garysupholstery.com/
Most larger cities have an "upholstery Supplies" in the Yellow pages..Fgt wise the best way to go. I use 1/8" Luan paneling for the panels, glue sticks better than to abs.. Bill Hirsch in Hemmings motor news has the best prices on genuine leather.
www.roddoors.com interior for anything that rolls, floats or flys--tires or propellers. Would love to be allaince vendor. Kevin
I want to make my own door panels here soon but need to figure out what I am going to use for the backing board (not sure the technical term for this sorry). I hear some using plain original wood like board, PVC and some other stuff. What do you guys that do interior work recommend? The panels on this car are fairly easy with no arm rests and just plain square. The only thing I plan to do is use some kind of foam to make them a bit thicker and nicer than flat glued vinyl. I also may put some kind of design into it but only one color (tan/Fawn).
There was an outfit at the Moultie Swap Meet that had all of this kind of stuff. I'll see if they are at Daytona. Most that are at Moultrie are at Daytona.
1/8 inch Luan is the way to go its flexible and easy to use. Sid Chavers uses the same in all his interiors. My 2 cents
I've been using 1/8" or 1/4" ABS plastic for a while now to make panels with. It's very durable, it won't break if you pull the panel a few times like wood can and you can form it with a heat gun if you need it to hold a shape. Use the 1/8" to make door panels and 1/4 if you need to form a corner as it gets thinner when you stretch it. Auto Custom Carpets has a great selection of carpets. http://www.accmats.com/
Thanks for the info guys! So what is the difference between luan and ABS plastic (I think I called it PVC earlier but meant ABS sorry)? I am guessing the glue sticks better to luan than ABS so it is the way to go? As for the carpet I may go with ACCmats.com but haven't decided on the carpet. I wanted to do it myself but dont have a sewing machine to do the lace or edges. I wanted the carpet a shade or two darker than the door panels and then the edge or lace around it to be the lighter door panel color... Either way tan (Fawn) is most likely the color I go with even though I'd rather have white. With it being a work vehicle, white is out of the question. Here is the exterior color I am thinking about: http://flickr.com/photos/7552532@N07/488672770/in/set-72157604038977005/ I was going to go with this green: http://www.carcraft.com/featuredvehicles/116_0501_1961_chevrolet_nomad/index.html That green in second link is kind of similar to the original 63 Chevy II wagon color but I'm not sure. I like the first minty green/blue color with a very slight touch of pearl. What do you guys think, any oppinions? I am still getting the car into primer so color isn't final yet. Dont mind the wheels in the pictures either please, I am sticking to the original rallies or may do steelies with rings and moon caps (possibly white wall tires). I thought about getting a nice wood grain looking surf board to throw up top and have that surf look to it. Anyways, oppinions are appreciated, I'm open to anything. Thanks again!
I like the first color better personally. I would go with rod doors myself as thier local, if they allow you to pick up. Help save on some cost as well as support local buisness. But I guess that depends on if they allow that or not. I do like thier ABS door panel sets, so I guess I should find out since I'll be getting to my door panels soon.
Hobby Lobby has a good selection of vinyl. If you feel like riding out to Concord, I can show you a place that has any kind of foam, hog rings & pliers, vinyl, tweed etc. that you would need. If they don't have it, they can order lots more. As for the backing materials, I used 1/4" luan plywood for my door panels. I didn't want to have to worry about cardboard or masonite getting wet and wavy. PM me and I'll hook you up with the supplies place. As for carpet, it'll probably be cheaper to buy a pre-made set than to have someone sew it for you. Google "ACC carpet", I've heard a lot of people have been satisfied with their stuff.
ferguson, I will have to hook up with you then and meet you at Concord. I'm only about 35 minutes from there. I will let you know here in the next 2 weeks. Thanks!
The ACC carpet is good for a driver but not nice enough for fancier cars. I have some in the 54, fit is ok. If I had the rest of the inside redone it would need to be replaced with nicer carpet. Like I said, good for a daily.
Mine will be a driver. Carpet is not VERY important to me but as far as the back goes, I want to see if the company will give me extra so I can cover the back panel of the back seat that folds down so it is carpet as well instead of a stock metal panel that is there now. That way when the seat is folded down it's all carpet.
