I've got this project '66 El Camino, So far i'd call it a period correct hot stock rod. It essentially looks stock, save for the original Torque Thrusts and the 3 inch flowmaster tail pipes. I'm looking for opinions as to where to take it next. I know it's kind of a broad question but any ideas would help. I want to keep it as close to the style of the 60s and late 50s rods so no 20 inch billet wheels here haha. I talked it over with some of my friends, Jose and Greg of the Venice Devils CC and we came up with an interesting idea. For paint, we'd do a satin black with a red flake roof (too match the original interior) then have a deep metallic purple pin stripe running along the outline of the roof, down the rear pillar, to following the body line to the back where it would go down to where the tail light moulding comes to a point, then taking it back along the other main body line to the front. Lowering it, putting it on some Astro Supremes with some wide whites and completely shaving it. I'm thinkin maybe have a hilborn scoop come up through the SS hood vents.
better call it a 64...... I got kicked out showing my 66 off. oh and I like the satin, but 66's are more of a muscle car theme than a rod theme.
yeah that satin definitely looks bad ***. Did you put drop spindles in the front? the stance is pretty mean. Also, around the rear window, it almost looks like you have some sort of fasteners.... what are those? And yeah, I agree with you ******Man about the fact that those years are more of a muscle car than a rod. I still think it could be a very interesting project to see how it would turn out......either amazing or hideous hahah
astro supremes & a flake job would look funny on a muscle car. leave those for the traditional lowriders. you wouldn't do the same thing to a camaro would you? If you want to go with the flake job and supremes route, sell your car and buy an impala. Especially mine. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=291476
stock spindles, with 6cyl coils cut 1.5 turns. around the back window are the clips that hold the trim on.
You can't give a mid 60's car a 50's look. that just ain't rite. I'd go for a bellflower custom look like eyeball's old camino, or somthing similar with supremes for a lowrider look.
I love these years. And yours is a great one. Why would anyone want to paint a muscle era car flat anything??? Following the flat paint fashion of the new milenium. Your car is great as is. A custom car should not have flat paint to be traditional. You guys have it all mixed up. Pick up and read the old mags guys. This will let you know youre on the wrong track.
see what I don't get is, I'm living right now in 2008, my car is mine, I don't live in the 60's, 66 is my favourite year of elcamino, and I like flat black, it's been painted flat black for 4 years now, why can't I have what I want? all I'm doing is giving a guy an idea of what it could look like.
A-wall! Jeeez, the engine bay looks real neat! and the interior too, nice ride mate. About your project Dogtown, i'd say go for it, as you planned w/ your mates, in the mid 60s there where a lot of "un-usual" cars in the Lowrider movement, and done up w/ astros, bellflower tips and flaked roof i say it will be killer. Only go for pinner whites instead of wide ones. Good luck.
