Its a good starting point, but remember, NADA and Classic Car Price Guide are for "restored" cars and don't necessarily represent the cars on the HAMB. Its a good place to start.

In all this no one has mentioned American Hobbyist Insurance Co. They are listed on the Jalopy Journal home page as a sponsor of the HAMB. I signed up with them. My car was damaged on the 13th of this month. On the 17th, the appraiser came out, took pictures and we discussed part sources and such. I spoke to the insurance umderwriter today the 21st and was told the check for the full amount went out on Wednesday, the 19th. I'd call that pretty good service. They will also amend to pay if anything else is found as the car is disassembled.
With all that said, I'm not going to be satisfied until my car is exactly back where it was before. So far, I'm very pleased with their communication and the speed of payment. I thought the rate was very fair too. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out. Mike

I know it's been said, but I'm with Hagerty specifically because of two things:
    1. Two other people had "I totalled my car and they issued me checks almost immediately" stories
    2. They didn't make me sign a piece of paper swearing I'd never actually drive the car anywhere besides a car show. (I don't remember who, but one of the other big companies sent me that form along with their quotes!)

I know a guy who has been with State Farm on all his old cars forever. I hope no one ever hits his real Willys gasser!

The link I posted is kind of buried in the NADA site, I was looking for something else and found it.

It was not an endorsement of NADA. Their site is only a guide for ranges and most HAMB cars DO NOT fit into their brackets.

The information in that section will help HAMBer's know what to ask insurance agents so they are less likely to think, I'm okay I have insurance. Know what to ask for and you can make a more informed purchase.

  5. Hey popo !
I have insurance through allied with my 40 chev and my 33 chev-my agent sent in all my picutres and information to grundy-it took them a week and multiple phone calls to accept and have me send my first payment in to my agent and then deny because they reviewed my pictures and saw a rollbar in my 33 coupe-stating that because of the rollbar it was now a competion vehicle-

  6. And yes they do ask if this vehicle is kept in a locked garage-i even took pictures of my shop & the locked doors-just in case !!!

I have state farm. I have what they call antique car insurance for appraised value on my 32 ford.

What I have been told by them that even if my car gets damaged (like the rear quarter dented in) that they cut a check for the appraised value and not for a repair. they will take off for any existing damage on other parts of the car based on the pictures they took.

It costs me just over 600 for the year with a 500.00 deductable with full coverage.

Haggerty wanted 1200.00 for their policy based on this value.

I think it's a pretty good deal plus I think the other companys will repair the car first unless it's really totaled.

This happened to me also. I got a quote from Grundy on my 69 Camaro street car. They had no problem with the blower sticking out of the hood, but they said no way when they got the pictures of the interior and saw that there was a shift light. Not all racecars have blowers but all racecars have shift lights.

Me too! I did get a quote from them but when I got the paperwork to sign there was wording to the effect of "...car will not be used for errands, daily driving, etc" They also strongly recommend the car is garaged and "understand" if it is left out once in awhile but it is expected to be garaged. As some others here pointed out I have a two car garage already filled with one classic and one project so that leaves the others in the driveway. I just saw the potential for too many loopholes so I went with regular full coverage comp. insurance. It costs more but I sleep well and don't have any restrictions on where or why I drive.

Now when it comes time my Monte Carlo is definitely getting a policy with Grundy. It doesn't ever sit out or go to the stores so no problem there.

Odd that they would rule you out for that but I guess I am not surprised, there is wording about the insured car will not be covered for any racing or time contests. I am unanware of any insurance that does cover racing.

Myke, might want to check with your agent for explaination on your coverage, Ins Co wont just write a ck for the full appraisal if damages are minor like you suggest.

I did . I was at the agents and we called to the claims department. I was told the reason they do that is because they know replacement parts don't exist for early antiques.

I hope they were telling me the truth. I am sure they take the car when they give you the check.

I just signed it up so I will have to read my policy when I get it.

And they will be looking for any duck that is not in a row.An example given was in the Old Cars article was USE FOR ERRANDS.Most antique policies state "not to be used for errands".I occasionally will use one of my vehicles to go to PO or something in order to exercise it.According to the covenats of the policy,I'm in violation. However if I'm on my way back from a drive to a meet and stop in,it is no problem. It is all semantics and that is what law is based on.
This time last year I went to the mat with an insurance company.I learned that it is the local adjustor that rules. This one wanted to clear his desk and summarily assigned the majority of fault to me. Wouldn't return calls etc ,etc. I had to finally go after the corporate office before I got satisfaction.

Cheaper isn't always better. Always read the fine print in your insurance policy. I did some comparisons once and found on 1 of the companys policys previously mentioned in this thread.. I'd be covered if I was coming and going to a run or show, but if I stopped on the way home for a six pack and dog's to bbq and someone backed in to my car I would not be covered, it was deemed additional personal use. I've been with Condon & Skelly since the early 90's, multiple cars ,agreed value replacement and miles allowed. The only time no coverage is on the track should I choose to do a 1/4 pass. You get what you pay for..

  18. I just purchased what was American Hobbyist, as of Jan 5th, they are American Collectors, based on the recommendations of my brother Poor Boys, I think I got a good price, and it was based on a agreed value... The only thing I am concerned about is the new Co. asked me about estimated mileage, whereas the old company didn't (when I asked them for a quote before the change)...

Not really an issue until I get the speedo hooked up, but they were helpful and I had a proof of insurance document ready to print out in my inbox in a few hours.

I have an appointment to get plates Thursday at 3:30.

Somebody further up this thread said they couldn't get collector car insurance because of their driving record... I think we can all take something away from that... DON'T GET CAUGHT!!

AH Now AC bent over backwards to get my car insured in time for an event I wanted to take it to. I haven't had a claim but their service so far is top notch.

Haggerty sucks as far as I'm concerned, I have a very minor fender bender a couple years ago, got the required estimate, submitted it to them and since I built the car myself, I was going to repair it myself. Haggerty reduced the pay out, because I was going to repair it myself. They said I don't have as much overhead as a commercial shop. Needless to say I dropped them. Going with Grundy.
