I have a spare dana 70 if she wants, but wrong coast and maybe a little overkill for an Olds. :)

Best of luck Denise! Hope you get it worked out.

I have a 10-bolt (I think) from an S10 that I'll donate if it will work. If I can help in any other way, clue me in.

I've got a 63 Olds, complete. We all know how tough they are. But, would it make sense to go to something more "modern" that is easier to maintain?

Denise and Megan have always been the epitome of what this forum is all about. It is not just cars, but it is about family.
Hopefully she post here after she gets back to her home base and let us know what is needed, and we will get it taken care of one way or the other.
If she were to feel comfortable about posting a paypal address, we can get this solved.
If we move fast enough, we could get her to Daytona. She and Megan are the eyes and ears of this community and I was looking forward to her report from Daytone.
Let's give her time to let us know what is needed and I will bet that we can get it done.

I agree about helping her get this deal solved once and for all. Does anyone know if she has a paypal account? I would be more than willing to contribute some $$$$'s to getting this problem solved once and for all. If anyone here is deserving of a helping hand it's her. She has probably spent more on cookie dough than most of us have spent on the entire drivetrain in our cars. Lets figure out how to get this done for someone who wouldn't think twice about helping a HAMBer in need. She's done it time and time again.

I'm sorry to hear about the problems, I was looking forward to seeing her on Monday and getting that traditional Denise hug. Don't worry Denise, we'll have a toast to you and the party will go on for Skip and Debbie, it will just be missing you. There is always next year.

For all of you who don't know, The rear end was completely Re-built by a TOP Shop in Detroit. The only problem was they didn't loc-***e the bolt that holds the retainer pin and it came out, splitting in 3 pieces and taking out the carrier (Hole is elongated).
Ring gear is ok, but the pinion is cracked. Also a flying piece of shrapnel put an inch and quarter hole right thru the housing above the pinion. I put a plug in it and epoxied it from inside and outside. It won't leak again.
Those BOP rears have an 8.2 R&P and you can buy 1 from Jegs or Summit but the best gear ratio we could get was 3:55. Currently has a 2:78.....
She should be home as I write this as I made the HAMB Relay around 5:00 PM.

    Sorry to hear Girl,

If there is anything I could do.....ask. When you get on the road again holler or wave or something when you get to kentucky. Exit 125 off 75.

If you need something from this direction I'd be honored to haul it.

nice - glad to hear you got the rear squared away. That's one hell of a story. HAMB nation is awesome. Hope you don't like the acceleration of the 3:55s too much! :) It may be hard to go back to the 2:78s. Good thing gas is all cheap right now.

Are you still going to Florida?

    Nice rear Hot Rod Ch***is

I know this won't help right now but there is a guy in Washington that sells adapters to fit the Chevy 8.2 gear in a BOP rear. It works very well and there is a much bigger selection of gears for the Chevy and they are cheaper.

I'm guessing the shop is going to repair it, they are good guys, and a good shop. Crazy the luck she's having. Back in Sept. when we did Buckle's brakes she explaind how she just got the rear rebuilt and showed us the crunched axles from her trip out west.

I hope that shop makes it right, seeing as there is evidence that they f'd up. Otherwise I bet I know 60,000 people that won't be doing business with them. :) It will be like those Verizon commercials, we are the network and we go where Denise goes.

I wouldn't worry about keeping the connection to the original build. If Steve would have kept the car and had these issues it would be yanked by now! The only reason that rearend was used is that it fit the width, and was inexpensive. It's probably has over 200K miles on it easy. A later GM would be easier/cheaper than a 9" in my opinion.

What about we rent her a car so she can countiune on her adventure?

Thanks for all the help folks. In a nutshell Enjenjo saw this thread, called me this morning, has exactly what I need and the ring and pinion are already boxed up, addressed and will be at UPS first thing in the morning.

I do not plan on purchasing a whole new rear end. I might in the future when/if I go to a OD trans. Human error was the cause of this failure and once fixed I have every confidence it will last me as long as I need.

Thanks for all teh kind words and sediments, phone calls and note of encourament. I'm extremely bummed out and overly emotional right now but in a couple of days I'll be fine.

For more details, including photos, you can see this thread but I just wanted to put this one to rest with all my thanks.

I think a 9" would be a wise winter project...your current rear is clearly under a curse.
    Think about it...
Car is big, the weight of a 9 would be no problem.
Whole innards can be yanked and replaced beside the road with minimal tools...spare center sections are probably owned by 3/4 of the people on the HAMB, so you'd never be more than 5 miles from a spare carrier and a HAMBer with a jack...
Opportunity to start with a rear of known origin, so no parts problems, also a rear for which every possible part is readily available from a huge aftermarket.
Can swap innards quickly for Egorama or $5 gas crisis...
Just to be safe, carry a spare set of outer bearings (the only 9" part that can confuse a supplier) and you can be sure that the innards other than those are everywhere throughout the HAMB empire.

If you do patch that rear, don't do any "one wheel burnouts". That can cause one pinion to seize to the center pin, and even if the lock bolt does not snap like most will, it can snap that big center pin like a twig.

Siezed pinions are common on snow-plowing pickups when they get one wheel stuck in snow, and spin it too much.

  29. VERY GOOD ADVICE!

The only comment (clarification) I would like to add is that what was correctly called a "pinion" above is called a "spider gear" in the slang we typically use. Again, the previous advice is right on. One wheel burnouts are very hard on the differential pinions, differential pin, and the mickey-mouse "death bolt" that holds it in.
