ok.......i have read at least a dozen threads on here about rear end options for 54 bel air to open drive.......to the point i have them memorized....correct me if i am wrong but 82-93 s10 4by4 rears are supposed to be 60" hub to hub.....i had 2 pulled out of my local salvage yard both to measure 55" hub to hub.....am i missing some important detail..? thanks.....
I used a 4x4 rear out of an S-10 for my 53 it worked fine..think it was 58.5" WMF to WMF...came off of a 90 or 92 S-10
I used a 1999 s-10 blazer 4x4 rear in my 59 apache. It measured out at 60". I believe the 2wd is 58". Also 4 dr calipers are set different ( forward of center) than a 2 dr.
I think... I believe... I'm pretty sure.... WTF lots of good info on here. Get out the axle and the tape measure !
mine was out of a pick up truck..maybe they are not as wide as the blazer? any ways 1990 s-10 4x4 pick up Rear end fit up nice under my 53
Don't know about Blazer rears, but I pulled one out of a 75 Nova and after grinding off the gigantic perches it had it fit great. Good hwy gears to boot.
Blazers are wider than Pickups by about 3" The above measurements sound right. Don't ask how I learned this............................. FWIW, the 4.3 engine'd units had an 8.5" ring gear, if you're gonna abuse it any buy that one.
There's 3 widths of S10 rearends. Doesn't matter if it's a Blazer or truck, they share. WMS to WMS 55" = 2WD 59" = 4WD 63" = ZR2 off road option 7.5 vs 8.5 school 8.5 rearends are not common. Look in 2nd generation S10's that originaly had a 5 speed trans. Disc brakes were an option in '95 and became standard about '99. Below is the visual difference between the 7.5 and the 8.5 7.5" rear end. Notice how the axle tubes are straight The rear end cover is more squareish 8.5". Notice how the housing cover is almost completely round and the bulge in the axle tube just before it goes into the pumpkin See the bulge in the axle tube of the 8.5 where it enters the pumpkin. 8.5" cover (left) and the 7.5" cover (right) Another bit of good S10 axle info: Look in the glovebox for the production "data plate" sticker. It has the RPO codes to determine ratios and diff type. GU2 2:73 ratio GU4 3:08 ratio GU5 3:23 ratio GU6 3:42 ratio GT4 3:73 ratio GT5 4:10 ratio GQ1 Open Differential Rear Axle G80 Positraction/Locking Rear Axle example: 4:10 posi rear would have two RPO's. GT5 & G80 Exceptions to the rules: If you find only a GQ1 on the data plate and no "GU" or "GT" codes, then it's an open diff "standard ratio" of 3:08. If there's no "G80" or "GQ1" it's an open diff.
LowKat, thank you very much for the FACTUAL information. Very useful as opposed to the guessing shit.-MIKE
the s10 4wd rears are wider and fit the 49'-54' cars great. talk to the guys on www.chevytalk.com they know.
Here's a website for rear end widths. http://50chevy.freeservers.com/Suspension_Widths.html#Suspension
lowkat is the S10 god.. lol I was just thinking about this info and man you have saved me tons of time in the search before the pull!
