anyone have pictures of a 460/429 in a model a? wondering how it will look. i picked one up for cheap. i probably gonna go with zoomies and a vintage carb scoop. this motor is out of a '73 thunderbird.
I am running one in my F-100, great motor, easy power...better have GOOD frame rails/suspension. Not really any traditional parts available, and its gonna look REAL bloated! A friend has one in his Tub, it doesn't look bad, but its not drop-dead gorgeous, either. Please, don't get traction!
got any pictures of the tub? my frame is real beefy, it will handle the power/weight fine. yeah, its not going to be very traditional but im NOT going to run a lot of chrome or anything. im gonna paint it black and hopefully the motor wont be the focal point. i figure it will be a fun motor without much modification. i imagine getting power to the ground will be a problem anyway. the burnouts will be cool though.
I will see if I can find some pix of it. He lives in N.Y.C , now, and I don't see him too much these days.
Everyone has there own opinion, but I think they weigh to much, and are to big and bulky for an A Model. I do think they look good if done correct, but you need to think about frame flex, susp., etc. Just my 2 1/2 cents.
It's not the most popular motor, as you've read above, but there are several hemis and BBC in A's. I'd compare the weight of these engines to get an idea of where you're going with this. The A weighs about 2000# so it doesn't need much to scoot down the road. A 292 or 312 is more than enough and much lighter. But, I know, "I already have the 460" so that's what you're going to use, right? Well, be sure to take a lot of pics and keep us posted and....good luck.
I'm looking at a 429 and C6 tranny out of a '71 Thunderbird. Are you sure yours isn't a 429? When did Ford start making the 460s? What was "for cheap"? The guy wants $700 OBO for the 429/C6 combo that I'm looking at. That's probably way too much, even for a decent running motor(?).
My engine stand thinks they are heavier than that, at least with iron heads. I don't know for sure but I am thinking close to 750 with iron heads and an aluminum intake and 800 all iron. I haven't weighed one, but they got some beef. I would make sure the front end can handle it. The exhaust ports are really wheezy too. Now if you were to get a set of aluminum Blue Thunder heads with a BBC exhaust port the weight would fall right off, probably 100 lbs and they will run with about anything. I love 'em.
If you are planning on doing any "spirited" driving probably need to think of a cage in it. I've got a 428 FE with 2x4bbl and aluminum heads in my Model A Coupe sitting on a boxed '32 frame and it will twist it enough to rub the tires on the side of the body when I get on it. I have a 460 & C6 in the old '47 and it's heavy..
Here's my opinion. I had one. I "aquired" this pickup. Built 429/c6. It was ugly, and WAY too long. The only way to even remotely have a radiator without crazy disproportionate grille was to put it in the back. It did not look good at all. I got the truck STUPID cheap, went out, hit the gas....and broke the frame in ten places (crappy builder). Sold the engine and tranny and wheels for more than I paid for the truck and kept the cab cause that part I like. Anyway, just my .02 I wasn't a fan...
My buddy put a 429 in his Cj7. It was sick, but no room for the rad, had to run it in back between the rollbars. Its a bulky motor!
The 460 weighs 720lbs without intake, and exhaust and no fluid. A fully loaded 460 with all fluids is nearly 850lbs it is a seriously heavy beast but great engine.
this is starting to sway me. i dont wanna have to run my radiator somewhere else. i originally wanted to run a 302, startin to think i still should. i havent received the motor/tranny yet. maybe i can get my money back.
my 2 cents..? Go for it, be different. It's got a front distributor, so recess the behemoth into the firewall. You will get some stares at the shows and that thing will shake like nitro burning dragster! Awesome.
Although it's a different engine series, I ran an FE Ford 390 in my '31 Tudor Sedan. . .check out my album for more pics. The '31 Coupe I'm working on right now has a 354 Hemi. Although the FE motor was heavy, it sat back far enough that it wasn't right over the top of the Mustang II front end and it drove and steered great.
Here's a pic of my buddies 32. Seemed like it fit ok. I don't remember anything out of the ordinary for mods. The car ran great 528 pump gas motor. Mat
don't let these guys sway you away from this. you can make it work. there is a model a roadster with a 460 in an older hop up mag (not super old - one of the newer ones). the guy got it in there and was able to run a stock length hood and he even runs the hood sides too. it's set back a bit but it's in there. and remember this is in a roadster so it can be that far back.
Here is a website that has engine weights. Myself, I think a 460 would be fine. A 514 even better. One it has aluminum heads and intake I'd think the weight would be <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"><meta name="ProgId" content="Word.Document"><meta name="Generator" content="Microsoft Word 10"><meta name="Originator" content="Microsoft Word 10"><link rel="File-List" href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5CEJ9442%7E1.STI%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtml1%5C01%5Cclip_filelist.xml"><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:Compatibility> <w:BreakWrappedTables/> <w:SnapToGridInCell/> <w:WrapTextWithPunct/> <w:UseAsianBreakRules/> </w:Compatibility> <w:BrowserLevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><style> <!-- /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} @page Section1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> </style><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} </style> <![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:shapedefaults v:ext="edit" spidmax="1026"/> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:shapelayout v:ext="edit"> <o:idmap v:ext="edit" data="1"/> </o:shapelayout></xml><![endif]-->[FONT="]comparable[/FONT] with other big motors. Just havin' the distributor in front is worth something besides it's not a "bellybutton" ... !
Here's 521 Ford Racing Crate at right at $10K. Its still over 700 lbs, but its a bargain. Stout! http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField=10355
1968, but only available in the Lincolns, Fords got the 429. For '73 the 429 was gone and Fords got the 460.
