Hello, hope everyone has a great turkey day. Question, how and the hell do I remove the upper control arms off of my 53 210? Do I need a special tool to remove the threaded bushings? From what I have read on http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/ The bushings are threaded to the upper control arm shaft. Before I start wrenchin, I want to make sure I am doing it right. Thanks again
You got it, unscrew the bushings to remove them, the new kits should have the screws and rubber bushings, good luck, Hotrodhill
you remove the pins that hold on the uprights, then the bushings that hold the arm to the member. its easier if you remove the lower a arm inner ipins from the crossmember first. make sure to have a jack under the arm when you do it so the spring doesnt go shooting out and kill you in the head. let me know if you need an spare parts. i got a bunch of em. if your talikng about the pins that the bushings thread on to youll have to weld a nut to the end and then cut it off after your done, unless you have the special tool that removes them
oilslinger53, so you recommend I start with the lower arm first? All I am trying to do is remove the control arms clean them up, repaint and put back on car. Do you think its necessary to remove the pins and bushings on the lower arm?
its much easier if you take the lowers off first because the spring creates so much pressure on the pins. its almost impossible to slide the concentric pins out without removing the spring first. you dont need to remove the lower bushings, just the four bolts the hold the inner lower pins to the crossmember. just remember... back it up with a floor jack. theres also a screw that goes down in the top of the uprights and fits into a groove in the concentric pin that i didnt see when i first did this. i ruined my pin by trying to hammer it out of there the first time
Ok, I now understand how to remove the lower arm from the cross member. Oilslinger53 if I understand what you are saying about the upright, I need to remove the screw from the top of the upright and then the bolt in order to separate the lower arm from the upright? Is this correct.
has to be removed to remove the pin that holds the upper control arm to the upright. the lower arm can stay attatched to the upright
pull from the front. but like i said those thread into the crossmember, and unless you have the special toolto get them out you gotta weld a lugnut to it and un screw it. they are very tight too
