Moultrie was a dud this year. Normally its run from Thurs-Sat but this year it ran thru Sunday. Way too many vendors and allot of overpriced ****. Nice 32 Grill Shell $1800...unbelievable. Very little early stuff, to me its turned into the Chevy 350 show. Nothing but Chevy stuff. Cold snap on Saturday scared everyone away and over 1/2 the people left so Sunday was a ghost town, only the desperate remained. Whats another major swap meet in the south east thats worth the trip.<O</O<O</O
yeah, 350 Chevy show is right...I DID get a flathead engine crate...sigh..what a waste of fuel...Daytona next year for sure.
hmmmm not what I wanted to hear....after spending the last 5 years (or more) at the turkey run (and this year too) I was thinking about a change of venue to moultrie next year.....hmmmm
Made the Feb (?) show a few years ago and bought a MOPAR 4 speed and a few other early Hemi parts... had a ball but things do change.
Moultrie was as big as it's ever been. A dud? If you're a flathead guy, sure, you have to look hard. Found a 40's PU 3-speed for $50 ... not bad. Moultrie simply isn't the place to find a lot of early, unusual stuff. But, good finds can be made ... last trip, a perfect set of deluxe 39 hubcaps. Never know what might show up. Lots of Chevy vendors ... but .... a lot of guys want that. Really huge (maybe high hundreds, if not 1000) car corral with several early cars I liked ... great '35 Fordor, $17,000. Moultrie isn't bad. It's out in the cotton fields of south Georgia, and you can always stop at the Exum Pecan Warehouse and load up on pecans for Thanksgiving.
I have noticed the last few years that the show was turning into a Chevy expo. Nothing wrong with that if its what you are looking for. There used to be a ton of neat old stuff, but not so much now. There's just not alot of bargains to be had. I've bought some cool stuff down there, but paid full price for it. Glad we p***ed this year. Kevin Ooltewah Speed Shop
There were tons of vendors but 90% of them had the same thing. Tons of die casts, clothes and as said above, tons of Chevy stuff. I'll bet there were 5,000 intake manifolds for Chevy's. A little early Ford stuff, hardly any 40 - 50 Ford stuff. I did get a T-89 transmission and now don't know what I'm gonna do with it. Going to Turkey Run to see what's there.
This could be the optimist in me, but I think the economy is going to bring prices down in the next year. I also think a lot of people are going to be pissed off and leave Ebay because of their PayPal Only policy, and the additional fees and gouging. -Brad
Well, I had my usual good time. Walked till my feet gave out and still missed part of the car corral. Looked at what I found interesting, p***ed by the stuff that wasn't. Best $10.00 I'll spend all winter. And got a good deal on some wheels.
Brad, I'd be happy to see that (as we all would)... just picked up a Bosch Magneto for the speedster and PM'd the guy to see if I could use a money order instead "PayPal only"- no problem at all (I think Espay is in for a shock)
Any flea market is only as good as the things that you find. If you don't find anything it's always a dud. But I always say...stay home and look under the kitchen sink and see how you make out? The gas prices kept me away from some of my favorites this year because I knew that the supply is being hoarded by more and more people so the chances are slimmer than it used to be. I've wanted to come down there for a few years if only to see different vendors, cars and over priced parts. But if you find that one piece that you are missing then it's a home run! Stay home and your odds of success are reduced greatly.
I have been doing moultrie for several yrs as a vendor. If you only have chevy,or ford stuff, you are limiting your self, and your customer base. I carry different stuff and always have a huge sucess. this yr was no different. It was cold but if you kept moving it wasn't bad. some folks think that if they don't find a cherry 34 grill for 50 bucks they lost out. I saw lots of people i only see at a swap meet and that is interesting to me. I didn't get to walk around, but as i was leaving saw a guy with 2 32 frames, new, on a trailer, ask him how much ,1800, that seems good for a 3 cross member frame that is welded.
I found everything that was on my list and I bought several things that weren't on the list. Moultrie is a lot of things but most important is catching up with hot rod buddies and exchanging stories (lies).
That's the creed I live by concerning swap meets. It's like the lottery---buying a ticket doesn't guarantee that you'll win, but NOT buying one definitely guarantees that you won't. I made some of the best parts hauls ever at this year's swap meets. As far as gas prices go, take along a buddy and he'll split the cost of fuel with you.
haha, smart***! Engine DOLLY??? I dunno what the hell it's called, the thing with wheels on it, and you put a damn engine on it, and roll it around your garage and make engine noises.
We sold 3 bodies by dark Thursday night and found a little bit of early ford stuff. We left Friday around five and headed for home so we wouldn't spend more money.
