I recently purchased some unusual marker lights that came with a yellow tail light lens. I would like to use it as a tail light but it would need to have a red lens to be legal. Does anyone have any suggestions on a paint product that will properly do the trick. I have already gone to the typical auto stores like pep boys, checker and napa. The only option I've heard so far is a auto paint store mixing up some paint for me but they weren't sure it would work. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.
Go to the wrecking yard and get a large flat piece of red lense. Cut it to fit your taillight. There's more to it than having a red colored taillight. You need something with prisms cast it to make it actually visible to the public. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding a broken taillight lense. Lots of cars that come in are wrecked and around here, the ***holes will break open a multi-hundred dollar taillight lense and case just for the light bulb. No small wonder the junkyard operators are getting crabby. Might tell em what you're looking for so they don't think you broke up the lense....
Can you just run a red bulb? Many of the ricers run clear lenses and red/amber bulbs, this might be the easy way out.
I have used red ****m marking fluid with some success - get it at a good tool store. Maybe SEM has a translucent plastic dye - their plastic dyes are top notch
Here's another thought-make your own- http://www.hitechledproducts.com/pr...d=191&osCsid=c921cb67dfa01dbbb7fff220c59bb734
A friend of mine bought some "converted" lights for his late model. When he got them - he was surprised that they were the origional yellow lenses painted red. So while I can't tel you what the paint was - I can tell you it does exist - his have been fine for several years now. What about contacting a paint manufacturer and telling them what you want to do - they ought to be able to help you out.
You can spray red candy on the inside/outside of them and clear over them to protect them. I did this when i had my 53 cadillac and they taillights were really faded. They looked brand new
I'm always blown away by the how even the smallest project gets so many different opinions and ideas. This is a great place.
I like the candy (transparent) red idea, but agree it should be on the inside/outside, or at least the outside. I think just coating it on the inside would still allow the lens to look amber on the outside of the vehicle which would look a little strange. Of course it depends highly on the shape of the lens, etc. Post some pics when ya get done!
